Please for the love of God do not watch that film. Joss was so mad at what was done in that film that he made the TV show. I have a high tolerance for camp and or "B" films. That one just hurt to watch.

Jacqui: "Cordelia coming in CLUTCH?" I'd say she mostly used the accelerator, not the clutch. I'll see myself out. ;)

I watched it after the series and hated it. Probably because it's so unlike the series.

That's interesting to hear! I can't wait to see how the show evolves.

Movie Night

It was definitely a worthy season finale!

Movie Night

Ooh! That would be so much fun to check out at some point!

Movie Night

Thank you! And gotta appreciate a series where there's lots to deep dive 😃

I'm looking forward to seeing how the series grows! Seven seasons is exciting, if a little daunting 😂

Movie Night

That could be fun to check out!

So regarding what happened to Buffy, my take is that, it was Buffy getting back up after hitting "rock bottom." She had literally died, but she was brought back. So the prophecy had already been fulfilled, and now the Master had nothing else to threaten her with. There was nothing else he could do to her that would be worse than what just happened, and therefore, there was nothing to be afraid of anymore. And I think that explains why the Master's hypnosis didn't work on her after that. If you think back to the little speech he gave about fear in episode 10 Nightmares, he said, "But fear is in the mind. Like pain. It can be controlled. If I can face my fear, it cannot master me." So I think his hypnosis works through fear. He has learned to control not just his own fear, but also the fear in others, and that gives him power over them. But when Buffy comes back with all her fear gone... no more control method.

The film with Kristy Swanson as Buffy was ultra campy, so you can look at season 1 itself as a big step in tone change for the franchise.

Well now you can say that you've had a proper taste of what is to come. There's some really powerful moments here from Buffy and Willow. The general shoestring budget shows in this episode but the show really picks up from here. Production value definitely goes up and up.

I love the way you draw attention to all the double meaning in both sides of the dialogue in the scene with Buffy, her mom, and the dress. You enrich the experience so much by highlighting the craft behind it all, and you do it with an economy of words so you're not talking over everything all the time.

David Bresson

There is an un-aired pilot for the show on youtube where Willow is not played by Alyson Hannigan, it might be fun for you to react to it.

"Dramatic" is a very good word for our first finale. I've often commented it almost feels like a mini feature film and I think the drama and intensity go a long way towards that cinematic feeling. I think we might have just really leveled up in a number of ways.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Buffy started out as a mid-season replacement, which is why the first season is short. Also, the tone and style of the show definitely evolve over time, but to me this is the episode where the show starts to settle into its final (sort-of) form.
