The Expanse 2x06 Full Length Reaction

I added extra clips around the act breaks/cuts to black to help with syncing, since apparently some copies have longer cuts than others. I hope this helps!

*Please note, this is the full length version, and due to copyright restrictions, requires you to sync your own copy of the episode.

You are right. The Epstein story is a short story published as "Drive". They incorporated it into the show because the Martian invention of the Drive is how Mars became independent from Earth.

Granger Hermion

I think Epstein's story serves a few purposes. It adds extra world-building and historical context while reinforcing the themes of the "present day" events. His technological breakthrough reshaped the entire solar system, enabling Mars to become independent and humanity to colonize the Belt. It's also an interesting contrast to hear Epstein reflect on his invention and legacy, and what it would do to Mars and humanity, only to later see the same drives are being used to deliver the planet-busting first strike nukes. It’s a powerful reminder that technological progress is always a double-edged sword. I hadn’t noticed it before, but the narration in these scenes does feel a bit awkward implying he may survive. However, I think it was a necessary choice for the medium. In the books, this could be all conveyed as inner thoughts. Even though there wasn’t a final cut scene showing Julie and Miller, I think it was strongly implied what happened to them at the end of the last episode when Eros crashed into Venus in a massive explosion. But I’m all in for hearing your ideas about where you think the story might go. As someone who already knows the direction it takes, it’s fun to hear these speculations. This is the kind of series that managed to surprise me continuously with story directions I hadn’t even considered.

I never gave much thought to the Epstein story except as an example of how certain discoveries change the course of history. But as you brought it up, another possibility came to mind. I have not read the books so I'm just throwing this out there. As I understand it, the Epstein drive allowed for greater efficiency and/or higher acceleration. If the ship kept accelerating until the fuel ran out, it might have reached such speeds that it would eventually leave the system in a few years instead of decades. WHAT IF that ship moving at such speeds attracted attention out there? Could that have led to our system being a place for investigation?

I think that urge you are sensing to rewatch the entire series, is also the same thing that contributes to so many of us watching reaction after reaction to this show. This show is SO re-watch-worthy.

Thus begins my favorite 'season', or at least adaptation. The Epstein flashbacks are as you speculated at the end a very interesting choice to bring in that exposition and really drive paradigm shift theme. Not to mention flesh out a really great book quote, even if it doesn't quire make sense how we are hearing the voiceover.

That first shot you're talking about is basically a rewind. So in the last few frames it *is* giving you a shot of the colony. The only thing that hasn't changed is the camera's perspective. We see the debris of Deimos and a wide swath of massive cities on Mars (present day) and then we see the moon reconstitute, the lights fade away to represent a much more modest settlement and then the title card changing from Mars Congretional Republic to Mars Colony and we're in the past. It's pretty subtle but I'm sure you'll notice it when you go back for the edit.

Dude, that's awesome! You be you! 👍👍

I'm probably weird, but I actually have fun trying to keep the videos perfectly synced, and the little challenges that arise from the weird cuts from different sources. It's like a little minigame I get to play while I watch.
