Notably, Trump's on-again, off-again proposals to tariff specific countries with which he has a personal grudge does not conform to Yaroufakis's porposed model of Trump erecting a general tariff wall which he would lower to specific countries pursuant to monetary concessions. Maybe the steelman arg is what Trump's advisors think they're doing, but it could just as easily be William McKinley cosplay where they think tariffs=more factories and more factories=more good.

2025-03-16 18:47:13 +0000 UTCHey Matt, I had a similar view of the Trump tariffs to you but I heard on the Ezra Klein show a theory that made it make sense. Trump may be doing global reciprocal tariffs on April 2nd to try to get what are called the Mar-A-Lago accords. Based on the plaza accords, he wants to weaken the dollar globally in the hope of propping up manufacturing. While this is incredibly stupid and harmful to the average American it at least makes the tariffs make sense.
