Christmas Eve Special
Added 2023-12-25 02:22:23 +0000 UTCLong episode for Christmas Eve. This episode has it all! (I forgot what is in it)

Late listening but must comment on the laundry situation. It must be a generational thing. If you don’t dump everything out, how can you sort into: dark, light, white, delicate, jeans, sports wear etc???

2023-12-31 01:00:46 +0000 UTCIf we feel weird looking at hot mary then how do we feel about the neck and décolatage of the prostrated naked sweaty christ as depicted in the west? At the very least he's had a nose job and skin bleaching if we are to be historically accurate. There's no need to have a tendril of wheat coloured hair hanging just so in front of azure eyes- but I suppose like most things- humans are attracted to 'beauty ' (obv v subjective and geographically and temporally dependant)

2023-12-30 11:57:12 +0000 UTCso I'm really the only one who's turned a bunch of white shirts pink in the laundry? Why does my machine have specific settings for dark clothes!

2023-12-28 19:30:23 +0000 UTCRe: tips, Matt is right to point out the restaurant owner's linguistic confusion, but the underlying situation actually is complicated, so Matt's take really fell flat for me. I know people who work in kitchens/back-of-house who are super resentful that servers get paid way more through tips. To bridge that gap, some restaurants pool tips and redistribute them, but employers often exploit that to classify more workers as tipped so they can pay them less, driving everyone's average wage closer to the minimum. Also, the tipped minimum wage and the rules for pooling vary a lot between different localities. Would be interesting if Matt did a deep dive into restaurant tipping policies across the US / other countries and ranked different policy choices.

2023-12-28 12:59:09 +0000 UTCI too am dying of curiosity here. My high school fanfic was three rounds of NaNoWriMo. Can’t say it got me far as a writer in the end.

2023-12-28 04:39:53 +0000 UTCAgreed. As a public school teacher I have seen many cases of bright, even gifted students test poorly. Usually a combination of anxiety, self-doubt, or careless errors. Some can even score well one day and less well the next. Plenty of them also have undocumented disabilities that would potentially qualify them for accommodations like extended time, breaks, etc. Proving these things can be maddeningly difficult, if not impossible, just based on red-tape and a very broken system. I appreciate that standardized tests can yield useful data for more dire intervention (eg student reading comprehension being at an all-time low) but as a metric for evaluating individual student intelligence or aptitude, it’s reliability is borderline at best IMO.

2023-12-26 15:41:14 +0000 UTCCorey Robin's "The Politics that Trump Makes" published Jan 11, 2017, was one of the most accurate previews of the Trump presidency. The conceptual framework that he outlined in the article (applying Yale prof Stephen Skowronek's theory of presidential power) has also been very helpful. As far as Hamas goes, technically, Israel and Netanyahu government had a more influence over its rise than ordinary Palestinians. e.g. Hamas is a byproduct of the occupation (its leadership were survivors from the 1948 Nakba, its rise was facilitated in direct and indirect ways by the Likud Party and its strategy of "divide and rule"; the resort to militancy was also fueled by the refusal of Israel to acknowledge or accommodate Palestinian rights in any meaningful way with respect to security and self-determination). Israel's slaughter has also made no distinction between Hamas's militant wing, its political and social wing, politically disengaged Palestinians, and even people who have been vocal opponents of Hamas. Israel's violence has been directed indiscriminately against all Palestinians within both Gaza and the West Bank.

2023-12-26 04:46:05 +0000 UTCJust wait until the girls are teenagers and they (gasp!) steal each other’s clothes! Or worse, the ultimate betrayal, when Liz starts wearing their old worn-out t-shirts around the house 😱 How will Matt cope when the “little people” clothes slowly blend together as the laundry room descends into chaos? Will he crack under the pressure? Will he ever regret taking over laundry duties from Liz? Find out next time on The Bruenigs: The Laundry Saga®

2023-12-25 07:37:31 +0000 UTCMore often than not, an ugly visage is a marker of an ugly soul and vice versa. There was an old viral twitter thread comparing the faces of the players of Revolutionary France and it's hard to come away from it thinking otherwise... All that to say, I subscribe to the Pope Lenny school of aesthetics rather than the Francis school. Make Mary Beautiful Again!

2023-12-25 06:10:26 +0000 UTCMan, *hard* disagree on the validity of standardized testing as a measure of intelligence/academic ability, from the opposite perspective of your poorly-testing imagined questioner; I scored 90th percentile or better on basically every test I took over the course of a fiasco of an academic career that left me with a GED and a culinary certificate. My explanatory take is that test-taking is its own skill, from remembering and producing trivia on command to understanding the logic of the questions to guess effectively. It doesn't predict whether I will ever write or turn in a paper (I will not)

2023-12-25 05:01:50 +0000 UTCI havent quite gotten to my laundry system with the kid's ages yet, so appreciate the great ideas. But total understanding and on Matt's side because my dishwasher system is great and anyone else that fills it with usually no system makes my eyes twitch.
