At the beginning of this school year, we were going over an agreement for the school year with my 1st grader - it included a statement for him to agree to, another for us parents, and one for his teacher. His teacher’s included something about making a “safe environment for learning” to which kiddo stated that he doesn’t feel safe at school. What made his feel unsafe? “The robbers, or whoever, that will come to get us.” My 6yo could only think of robbers as the people who go into buildings with guns, but understood that he was preparing for someone to break in and “get” them. If he had said “shoot”, my heart would have broken. Fast forward to last week. Last week of school. This same teacher talked with her 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders (90% of whom are Hispanic) about the shooting and gave them time to ask any questions and quietly pray or offer a kind thought for them and their families. It sounded like one of the kids asked during circle time. 💔 I definitely would not have told my kiddo about it. I couldn’t keep it from him. I definitely thought they were masking the purpose of these drills in PreK and Kinder. I was wrong. We live in Austin.
