Matt Debates Job Guarantee with Mark Paul

This is the audio from a debate hosted by Philly DSA about the JG. Matt argues against the JG. Mark Paul argues for.

There is a video of the recorded zoom call here, though I thought some might prefer to have it in audio podcast form as well. Apologies for audio quality which obviously is not as good as usual due to the format.

A lot of the intuitive appeal to folks on the left of a job guarantee is that it could be a way to democratically identify socially valuable work that the market doesn't produce, and then put people in these jobs. Matt pretty convincingly argues that actual job guarantees are likely to look a whole lot like workfare, and he's pretty convincing in arguing that better unemployment benefits along w/ a full social safety net pretty much solves the 'unemployment' problem, but I'd like to see him more thoroughly address the 'markets fail to create certain necessary jobs' problem (which admittedly his opponent didn't really cover here either.)

The virtuous nugget at the core of the JG idea seems to be providing direction and capacity/skills to unemployed people (the "learning on the job" point). Why not just say a development/assistance guarantee then? This really just becomes an education at any point you want it for a career you think you might want. And if you don't know what career you might want, then the program provides guidance if you want/need some direction. But all the while, yes, give them unconditional (or nearly unconditional) income to live. And if e.g. there is a dire deficit of climate focused workers bc not enough people want to do this work, then those that are able just split it up in what they consider a just manner (like doing the dishes or something!)
