2025-02-20 15:32:26 +0000 UTCI had a Pit-boss for 4 years and it worked great. Used it at least 3-5 times a month. I cleaned it regularly and emptied the grease trap. Unfortunately it caught on fire when I tried to set it to 500 degrees when I was trying to crisp my ribs and get that nice bbq bark on it. I normally throw the ribs on my regular two burner propane Weber at the end, but it was out of propane this time so I thought oh I’ll just turn the smoker up to the highest setting it can go. I had never used the smoker for anything higher than 300 degrees at this point.I think what happened is even though I cleaned it regularly and emptied the grease trap, I did not account for the grease caked on the side walls and around down below the bottom grate that separates the pellet chamber and the main part of the smoker and it got so hot that the grease ignited and soon the whole inside of the smoker was engulfed in flames. Thank god my wife and I were able to put it out by unplugging the power chord and opening the door to the smoker and just let the grease burn off. It was some scary shit. Only the smoker and the dinner for that night were ruined and I realize my errors in hindsight. My family was safe and so was our home. I’m currently looking at newer models of Pit-boss smoker because I’m definitely gonna get a new one. I will never use it at a temp higher that 300-350 though. There’s not a lot that you smoke those high of temps anyways. This happened back in November and I miss my smoked meats!
