Sacred Symbols+, Episode 436 | Ranking PlayStation's IP (Part I)
Added 2025-02-15 17:00:18 +0000 UTCIt's me, Colin. In search of a new episode of Sacred+ this week, we accidentally stumbled into at least two. That's because we -- myself, Dustin, and Brad -- bit off a little more than we could chew, albeit serendipitously. Thus, we present to you the first of a two-part episode dedicated to the ranking of Sony-owned PlayStation IP from both first and second party, from the very beginning of the PSone era to today. The only rule here is that Sony must own the game or franchise in question (so, no Crash or Spyro), though it doesn't matter if Sony itself owns the developer that made it (so, Uncharted is fine, but so too is Heavenly Sword). Yet, as we got into this exercise, we realized there was a whole lot more to dissect than we anticipated. So instead of rushing and half-assing it, we thought we'd go slowly and deliberately, split things in half, and post a follow-up in the coming weeks. For now, enjoy the opening salvo of our herculean task: Giving every PlayStation IP a letter grade, from S to F. Certainly, this won't be contentious in the least!

Console sales are the only thing that matter in the business apparently, series are worth more because they sold more??? Death Stranding, while ambitious, is definitely a B, even if you guys like it. Ratchet should be S, Horizon should be B (and I love Horizon), and I think Ghost should B unless they nail this second game

It's way more beloved than TLOU2 and better selling despite coming out a month later and as a new ip. I love both games personally and I think when Colin replays it he will do a 180 on the game.

I thought the ownership of the Death Stranding IP was handed off to Kojima Production in 2024 too, there are a lot outlets reporting that Kojima had full ownership of the IP. Still, these are a lot of fun and it's really cool that you guys are doing this.

2025-02-15 19:24:55 +0000 UTCMy assumptions of how this tier list would work with you guys was off. Some early IP were left off. At least I didn’t see either Colony Wars or G-Police. Suggestion for a future episode: find people within the Patreon base who loved obscure, lesser-known games and let them pitch why they deserve to be more recognized and/or revived by Sony. Colony Wars should be a game that is mentioned with the best of the best PS1 games amongst the likes of FFVII/IX, MGS1, C:SOTN, etc but because it’s in the niche flight/space/sim/shooter genre it is never recognized as such. For a 1997 release, it’s a game that looks, sounds, and feels AAA for the time. The gameplay still holds up. Very challenging and non-linear progression with 70+ missions. It’s hardly ever talked about and it deserves to be recognized. Was hoping their classic G-Police rerelease on PSN was a sign of a Colony Wars classic release in the near future, but I’m still waiting…
