Constellation, Episode 76 | Lore, Idioms, Retro Gaming's Appeal, Fashion

Welcome back, one-and-all, to another episode of Constellation, Last Stand Media's conversational podcast. It's me, Colin. This week, I'm joined by LSM's associate producer Ben Smith, Sacred Symbols' Chris Ray Gun, and Summon Sign's Brad Ellis. Our meandering chat begins with Brad, who wants to know what we think about fashion. Do we care about clothes? Are we into certain brands? Do we have what we'd consider an individual style? From there, we move onto Ben, who gets into idioms, the nomenclature that we use constantly, but that has a meaning beyond the literal. Which ones do we enjoy employing? From here, we move onto Chris, who inquires about the lore of our favorite pieces of fiction. Do we like getting into the nitty-gritty beyond what's right in front of us? Do we delve into in-game documents, novelizations, and iceberg videos? Finally, I round things out by laying out my love for retro gaming, while wondering if I'm enamored with old and old-style games because they're what I grew up with, or if they really are, in fact, the cream-of-the-crop.

Did I miss it completely or was Brad missed for the retro gaming section?

Also vuori is the best athletic/leisure brand out there. I haven’t worn jeans for about 4 years.

Stance the sock company makes great socks and their infin-knit line you can take any pair of socks with holes in them and exchange them for a new pair. Most comfortable socks I’ve ever worn. They also make t shirts. I like just plain t shirts of primary colors. Those are super comfortable. Brad could check out the shop they have in the Irvine spectrum.

Oh shit Teh Vesti was mentioned

Bite the bullet isn't about surgery. It's about muskets. You'd have to bite the paper cartridge that had the bullet and powder you'd then load and ram down your musket. This caused a rebellion in India when a rumor the wax used to seal them was made of pig and cow fry. Bite the bullet is like saying, "shut up and load your gun."

NinjaDC

Surprised nobody mentioned The Elder Scrolls during the lore topic, that’s one rabbit hole that goes way too deep.

I didn’t know “Nip it in the butt” was the wrong idiom. I thought it referred to a herding animal that will nip at the butts of stray herd animals to put them back in with the herd?

KunaiParty

Dunno if this will get seen but as a linguist, I really enjoyed the idiom topic. To add more context, when people use incorrect words, there is a name for that “eggcorns”. Take for granite, for all intensive purposes, nip it in the butt, are all examples but there are many more. Sometimes people even believe they are saying them correctly when they aren’t. For added clarity, “sick” is not an idiom but slang. Slang is a way for people of a generation to understand each other and it changes meaning from generation to generation. Which is why Colin will say sick for the rest of his life but a younger generation will not. Both generations will continue to use idioms.

Dustin/Ben, can you guys start editing out every time Colin says ‘good shit’? Lmao

Looking forward to trying the Elden ring DLC. The original game fell WAY short of the hype for me by the time I played it. Combat is so janky and stiff to me for some reason and the enemies while visually awesome design wise got old when being recycled. From soft really needs to work on rewarding the player better for exploration in their games imo.

So funny that Ben brought idioms to the table because Colin bringing the idioms topic on KF is when I realized - Wow this guy is absolutely the odd man out. Turns out I was right.

I would rather not play games at all than play on a console like a stunted child

The term wife-beater reportedly became synonymous for an undershirt after a 1947 criminal case where a Detroit man was arrested for beating his wife to death, and newspapers printed a photo of the "wife beater" wearing a stained undershirt.

Welp, Time to put on my eatin' britches

Ben, I can’t speak for all cats, but the ones that I’ve owned naturally like to go inside and play with plastic bags.

Balenciaga is essentially Derelicte from Zoolander.

Mack Weldon Ace shorts are all the rage for me so far this summer. They are really comfortable and look great.

I wish I didn’t care so much about lore, man. Just makes stuff feel more rich. Edit: Chris is just a little bit of exposure away from loving Warhammer 40K.

Noah Friscopp

I saw “lore” and knew it would be Chris, haha.
