This was supposed to come out like two months ago when High Guardian Spice was actually relevant, but it wouldn't be me if I didn't completely fail to meet my own deadlines.
But yeah, I wrote this in November, but then I got distracted by Komi and put it on hold. Then I got sick in December and by the time I was better, I had completely forgotten this video even existed. A couple weeks ago I was searching for a topic for the next Katsu episode, and discovered this fully-written script just sitting there, and it was like a late Christmas present.
On its own, High Guardian Spice isn't anything horrible. It's just a mediocre American cartoon that draws on some basic anime tropes. The thing about it that really bothered me was the fact that a streaming service that specializes in anime, and claims to support the anime industry, was using its funds - its subscribers' money - for something like this.
I used to be a Crunchyroll subscriber back in the day when I was young and the internet wasn't what it is today, but that ended a long time ago. Still, I used to give them money, so I can easily imagine being kinda pissed if I was still paying them and this show came out.
I wanted to do a video on it, but the show's already been yeeted into oblivion. It's been dismantled, dunked on, and dragged through the mud. The reaction towards its initial announcement was so negative that Crunchyroll threw it in the basement for two years before releasing it.
Fortunately, Katsu provided me with a humorous angle I could look at it from, and that's how this video was born. There's definitely some actual criticism in here, but I tried to couch it in the stupidest possible idea I could. It's complete nonsense, but I hope it's entertaining nonsense.
I'm curious if any of you guys watched this show, and what you think of it, especially if you're a Crunchyroll customer.
Also, to everyone who's still here supporting me on patreon, thank you, and I mean that now more than ever. When you're an internet hobo like me and you rely on people's generosity to survive, the end/beginning of the year is a rough time. Money gets tighter for everyone, and people need to direct their funds toward necessities rather than paying for silly youtube videos. The fact that you guys are still here during the leaner times really means everything. Thank you so much.
Anyway, time to get to work on the next video. Love you guys, and feel free to dm me with any questions.
