You caught the obvious parallel to "Frankenstein", but the plot as a whole is taken almost directly from the original novel. The Creature's loneliness due to its appearance and the desire for another of its kind is a driving plot for over half the book. And ultimately it's a tragedy that this being, who didn't ask to be created and never asked to be a monster, is still doomed to be hated and feared because of it.
