Upon returning to the colony, Giers was faced with a completely new life. From the middle of the hierarchy, he had fallen to the very bottom.

He was transferred to a different, worse cell, and in the cafeteria, a surprise awaited him in the form of a broken spoon and his own set of marked dishes. He received food near the last and had even less time to eat than before.

In the new prison reality, his status was equivalent to that of a leper. He could no longer eat with the other "normal" prisoners from the common utensils, could not be in the same space as them, whether it was the shower or the break rooms, and could not touch anyone else's belongings. No one could share with him. Those prisoners who treated Giers well or with respect were putting themselves at risk of falling into the lowest caste as well.

All the dirty work, like cleaning toilets, floors, and collecting garbage, now became Giers' responsibility.

Before, no prisoner could allow themselves to humiliate, beat, or abuse Giers without consequences. This was called lawlessness and was severely punished by the other prisoners. Now, Giers was outside of that "law." Anyone could do whatever they wanted with him, and there would be no punishment for it.
