[Tier 3] SKZ - Thunderous Adlib Compilation & Chan Talks about Lip Sync
Added 2025-01-21 23:36:57 +0000 UTCVERY random, yes, but this one is going to be fun, we promise. :)
First, Changbin's Adlibs because...why not.
But more importantly, since we had a talk about pitch correction from yesterday's Two Kids Show, we thought we'd check out a video of Bang Chan explaining lip syncing and tuning!
Just as a general summary, here's our key points :)
1. There are multiple types of live/recorded performances
a) Total 'lip sync', where they only play the OG track and pretend to sing
b) Partial, where hey play the OG track, but also sing on top
c) Total 'pre-recorded lip sync', where they record a new vocal track on top of the existing instrumental for that particular stage and pretend to sing (helps reserve the live feel)
d) Partial, where they record a new vocal track, but also sing on top
2. When we say from time to time that 'they are still singing on top', we're referring to the possibility that they may be singing into the mic even if it's muted, not necessarily that it's not a lip sync situation.
This is because sometimes, it's easier to still actually sing than pretend to sing and not make a sound. Also, it could be that this is a partial situation that at the end had the live sound removed in post due to whatever reason, OR it could be a total lip sync from the start but they just decided to sing to keep themselves immersed.
3. The point is that there are always multiple things to consider! It's easy to learn about this kinda stuff, listen to something mediocre and say 'well there are probably other things to consider and so this is still good', but it's way harder to listen to something good and say 'well this could also be not as great as it sounds in reality'. It's always possible to apply this rule both ways (both to good and bad performances) and so there is no point in comparing groups or artists!
Alright, have fun with this one every! :D If you have questions, please let us know!

https://youtu.be/wF0k09ALvYA?si=iOm8P6OCNzkUPY1q In case you’re curious about the performance on the roof they were talking about. The weather conditions were awful and you can genuinely see how uncomfortable Lee Know was because of his fears of heights. Normally he’s okay performing on high places once he’s up there but I guess the weather plus the fear of heights was a bit much.

2025-04-06 10:04:29 +0000 UTCI'm with D-Som's maybe old way of thinking. If an artist is performing on stage, I want it to be live. Singing with a backing track or over the original I don't mind at all, cause particularly in Kpop they are dancing crazy tough choreos it might help to give a more stabilised sound (heavy breathing etc) but for me as a performer in a previous life, you train to be able to give live performances. I feel a bit cheated when there isn't live singing. Unless for any of the reasons that Chan and the guys stated, like outdoor conditions make it not possible etc. then it is what it is ☺️

2025-01-27 11:01:43 +0000 UTCI really don’t mind the AR or tune in music shows but when the theme of the show or broadcast is intended to be a live performance (like concerts and etc.), and they tune it, is when I don’t liked bc I don’t think is the purpose, if you are not gonna let them sing live then don’t say is live, and I think is a betray to the artists, idk but I totally with you guys. And yeah I know they sing over the AR and always is pleasant to here how they match the vocals or like Seungmin harmonize with them. This is why I love they First takes sessions, you can hear there voices, can’t wait to you hear all of them; and this broadcast is one of my favorites of oddinary era https://youtu.be/G9SEes4TcRg?si=lnWzP9beUv4hsGlC

2025-01-22 16:24:56 +0000 UTCChan actually talks about the differences with AR and MR. I can't find the link but he goes into some detail about how they record it. Also about the lipsync, you can tell when SKZ or other groups are live singing (with or without backtrack) when they laugh, or add an adlib, like Changbin just now and Hyunjin laughing because of it. Or when they completely change te lyrics, it's always fun to see when they do that

2025-01-22 15:12:43 +0000 UTCOh yeah helicopter pad thunderous performance, I’ll always wonder who’s idea was it to put them up there with heavy wind and rain especially when 2 members are so afraid of heights, like the thing didn’t even had railings, it was so dangerous and lee know could barely look up to the camera during his part, they were holding each other while dancing cause it was terrifying, praying for something like that to never happen again. But on the whole lipsync argument I know that some idols have expressed before that is not up to them sometimes to decide whether they will be singing live, that the broadcast company will request them to either lipsync everything, to do a lit live with the backtrack etc. I figure it might be because since so many groups are performing is easier for them to do everything faster if all the groups pr at least most of them do it. Also sometimes you can tell when it’s pre-recorded that they corrected the pitch before it aired cause on the fancams or the videos the audience records you can clearly hear them singing live, this one has happened to Skz specially with music bank tour, they pre-record singing live and then days later when is aired you can hear and compare with the audience video that they changed something and sometimes you can barely hear the live vocals which in my opinion is not needed for groups like Skz who focuses and practices so much on having good live vocals but sometimes the broadcast company still does it.

2025-01-22 11:45:58 +0000 UTChttps://youtu.be/sgRxcaPlMcQ

2025-01-22 10:12:23 +0000 UTCI suddenly remembered about the “007 bbang bbang” adlib. Seungmin said on bubble that he freaked out before his part and he’s afraid that he will lose it and laugh.

2025-01-22 06:19:55 +0000 UTCI need you guys to watch chans room ep 100 and 158. These two show how quick chan can arrange new songs and come up with idea. The songs so stupid and a bit of fun but is well worth watching to see some of his process and if anyone can chime in which ep chan and changbin write the first half of “can’t live with out changbin”

2025-01-22 05:53:18 +0000 UTCThe clip is from Chan’s room the video has just been cropped. He would go live usually every Sunday and just talk to us and listen to music together for about an hour and a half. He is my all time favourite yapper and it never stops to amaze me how he kept it going for so long and consistently amongst their schedules and while putting out all that music. This is edited from Chan’s room ep 141. If you want to check out the whole 11 min unedited clip, it starts from 01:08:44 https://youtu.be/KToCND8PkgU?si=GPwuXRXU9OTIuEmJ

2025-01-22 05:33:03 +0000 UTCthis is the beauty of Chan's room. he really spent time talking with Stay. Listening to music, explaining about music production and just talking about life. It is why it is so precious to stay.

2025-01-22 02:06:35 +0000 UTCHyunjin often just let's the back track take over so he can dance more for a bar or two. I see no issue with that. And Seungmin likes to harmonize with his back track a lot, which is super fun.

2025-01-22 02:06:32 +0000 UTCAlso like I think you have said before, sometimes the production / direction of the music show or performance they are on will play a louder audio over the top of the performance when it is aired so that every act sounds 'perfect' ... Like 2024's Music Bank Global Festival ... if you watch the raw Choreo cams for each SKZ stage the vocals are so much easier to hear ... they are definately singing live ... even when they perform Stray Kids riding around on the vans... in the official stage performance video they look like they are lip-syncing but if you watch the choreo cam or fan cams it is clear that they are singing live, the backing track is not as loud and the lucky live audience get the full vocal experience .... I wish they wouldn't tinker so much with the videos personally I like the live. Love how SKZ always try to make sure the fans know they are singing live... like when Bang Chan changed one of the line of Thunderous to 'We're singing live' .... during a music show performance ...here is the clip ... https://youtu.be/M7IVM6l8C2Y?si=D__Uws-aHskDFJco Or when Han accidentally started singing his bit of Case 143 in Japanese and Bang Chan missed some of his part on the First Take Case 143 .... there are more examples and I love it!!!

2025-01-22 01:20:54 +0000 UTCSeungmin will harmonize with his part in the backtrack a lot of times when they are live. I don’t know if he just likes doing it or if he does it so people know he’s not lip syncing.

2025-01-22 00:58:10 +0000 UTCPreface - these are merely my personal and general thoughts and opinions. A conversation that I've not personally seen in kpop spaces (but I have seen in musical theatre and opera spaces) is the fact that some singers are trained to be studio artists and not live artists, and vice versa. Some singers have amazing control on the microphone in the studio - they are able to get the emotive elements, the vocal flexibility, and overall tone perfect to the need of the song because they have the time to really sit with the song. They can take multiple takes to make the necessary micro-adjustments to make a really masterful product. On the other hand, some artists excel at the live performance, being able to lock in and emote, play with their breath support, and push all that through in a single live take. These are entirely different skills and don't always translate one to one. And while I prefer artists and groups with strong live performance skills, I don't think one negates the other. So when an artist is able to do both, it is a testament to their hard work and skill level. I also was of the mind for a long time that lip-syncing was synonymous with being a bad singer, but having worked in live theatre, I found that a lot of it comes down to safety and longevity of the artist's career. For example, the iconic high note in Phantom of the Opera is almost always pre-recorded. Usually the actor playing Christine for the run will do a live pre-record so that the atmosphere of the theatre is captured, but during performance, the singer backs off for that note or lip-syncs entirely. This is because that note can really wear down the voice over time, especially if you are doing 8 shows a week. No matter how strong the singer's technique is, to use your voice that often at such an extreme will cause fatigue and possible damage. So to make sure artists aren't calling out constantly for sore throats or laryngitis (or worse, developing permanent issues like vocal nodes and scarring), there are failsafes to protect the show's continuity and the artist's long-term health. It also guarantees the audience is always going to get the same shock value of that note ringing through the theater. Now, would I feel like I was stolen from if I paid for a live concert event and watched an artist or group lip-sync their studio recordings...yes. And that is because I personally like to hear the inconsistency that live vocals offer - the breathing, a missed line, the occasional vocal break. But things like backing tracks and a plug in on the mic for effect doesn't diminish the skill and artistry of performers. Especially the performers who are there because they love music and love performing music for their audience. It's about the immersion of the experience. I hope more music listeners (and kpop fans) will recognize that the conversation is not an either/or situation and that different groups offer different experiences. Listeners are looking for what they like, and everyone likes different things. Fortunately, there is so much diverse talent in the world that each group offers something to the listeners who like them. What I hope is that the industry stops trying to over-polish these experiences and remove the individuality from these artists and groups.

2025-01-22 00:55:42 +0000 UTCAnd honestly, the only times I’ve ever wondered about live vocals is when Felix sings. I’m not trying to be rude or anything, but it seems like some parts of their songs—especially his—are so heavily altered with effects in the studio versions that recreating them live with natural vocals would be nearly impossible. In cases like that, I imagine the artist might decide to lipsync to a prerecorded track or rely on a backtrack for support to make it easier on their vocals while still maintaining the quality of the performance. For example, in the Side Effects x God’s Menu performance on Kingdom, Felix’s vocals at the end were so heavily altered that it didn’t seem like something that could realistically be done live without some help. Obviously, it’s still him singing—it’s just prerecorded for the performance. But considering Kingdom focused more on stage presence and the overall show, that totally makes sense to me. Or another example could be the KBS Japan 2024 performance. In that case, it seemed like the audio—whether live or edited in post—was turned up so high that it was hard to tell their live singing apart from the backtrack. But award shows are also known for cranking up the backtrack to emphasize production/perfection, so that might explain it. (These are just the performances I rewatched very recently.) That being said, I went to their concert last July, and I know for a fact that Felix is amazing live. This isn’t about doubting his skills—it’s just an observation based on how these performances are sometimes structured. (Also, if I’m using any terms wrong, feel free to correct me—I’m not an expert in music, and English isn’t my first language.)

2025-01-22 00:49:18 +0000 UTCThis extra little reaction was such a surprise and honestly made my night so much better (time zones and all—it’s 2 a.m. here lol). Also, the 'I couldn’t decide' adlib was absolutely hilarious—I couldn’t stop laughing. Seriously, it’s moments like these that make their performances so fun and memorable.

2025-01-22 00:47:05 +0000 UTCI was supposed to go to sleep, but .... Priorities, I guess😅 I love the random drops and the discussion! The Chan vid is from Chan's room aaaand there's another one from a different episode, where he talks more about different ways to do the pre-recordings and why they'd choose to do it - if you're up for another 4 min side quest : https://youtu.be/fSZsdapn_RI?si=28Q-87YpRxDKtEY3 And I agree with Han-C, If I'm seeing someone in a concert, I want to hear it live. In the music shows, I don't really really care. I'll just assume there's a reason for it.

2025-01-22 00:43:17 +0000 UTCLoving your side quests 🙏 this is such an interesting topic! I agree with Han C if it's a concert I want to hear them live but if it's a show case thing or smth similar I don't care as much. It bothers me at concerts when they don't mix it well and the backing track drowns out the live vocals

2025-01-21 23:45:28 +0000 UTCYes, very random. I absolutely love the ad libs. It's very cute. I love how honest he is. I feel like it's a Chan's room thing. I haven't watched a lot of them. I started watching it forever go but I stopped on like episode 12 and I never got back to it. Backing AR? What is AR? Oh yeah no I definitely understood that the video itself was pre-recorded but the boys were singing live. It's kind of obvious that the boys were singing live. Actually. I don't know why anybody what question that. Once again D'some I really like your shirt. They pre-recorded mistakes? Yeah no that's not cool. Lol we love howl in harmony 🤣. Super in sync with you guys 😹
