đ Having a vertical screen was a great idea
Added 2018-10-18 12:43:36 +0000 UTCFor once I wanted to make a journal that escaped my typical status fare, or ranting about things. I'm going to talk shortly about something completely unimportant. I'll resume uploading tomorrow (Real life happened).
Anyways, some time ago, after seeing some Japanese artists sharing photos of their work spaces, I noticed that several of them had at least one screen aligned vertically. I kept thinking about it and decided to give it a try.
Around a month later, I don't regret the idea on the slightest. Quite the opposite, if you use your computer for more than gaming (because a vertical screen is not a good choice for gaming), I would certainly encourage you to give it a try. Even if in a first moment it looks like going against the current trend of going ultrawide.
For reference, this is my desktop in this moment.

I'll explain the advantages and disadvantages of having a vertical screen.
Advantages
The very first advantage: If you do program stuff, and avoid your lines being extremely long, you'll be able to see much bigger code sequences than you usually can with an horizontal screen. I know some people wont find this so important, but I know some peeps who will love that.
The second advantage is being able to see a whole document page visible, not having to scroll up or down to locate things in the same page nor having to zoom out so much that you cant read what the text says. I am aware that if you have a 4K screen this could not be a big issue, but if you use "normal" screens of 1920x1080 or less, it can be pretty helpful.
The third advantage comes with social networks. Facebook, Twitter, Telegram, etc. are made with verticality in mind, and that only got stronger with the usage of phones. Their layouts are thought to be vertical. Discord is the big exception, with side bars that can't be resized or hidden. And finally, an underestimated advantage: Being able to see these videos recorded vertically for some reason. Now I can look at the latest viral videos of people fighting on the street with the right screen ratio.
Besides that, you could find stuff regarding your own workflow: Being able to read more emails, watch two streams together one above the other, read comics one page at a time, etc.
Disadvantages
No advantages ever come without a disadvantage somewhere else. The disadvantages are pretty minor (in my opinion), but they do exist.
First, a lot of games and programs don't support vertical resolutions. This means that, if you want to use the vertical screen to play, or to watch a movie, it will be letterboxed, with a lot of wasted space. Some games do support vertical screens, like Terraria, Starbound or Age of Empires 2 HD, or emulated old arcade vertical games like Burger Time, but they are the less. So basically, a vertical screen is not for gaming.
Second, some programs could complain with the low horizontal resolution. Think that you won't have a 1920x1080 screen anymore, but a 1080x1920. And if your screen is smaller (e.g. 900x1600), the problem could increase. FurAffinity doesn't show the options to edit your submissions if the page is in a vertical screen, but since you dont do that often, that isnt a big issue for me.
And the final disadvantage is a physical one: Most screens aren't thought to be put vertically. What I did was fixing the screen to the wall and then using some books to hold it in place. Before that, I was holding the screen in place with a screw. So yes, if you want to try it, you'll require some planning beforehand.
That's it. If you're a power user and don't use the computer solely for gaming, I heavily recommend to give it a try. Maybe you'll like it more than you thought. (Or maybe not, that you decide its not for you).
