M² Episode 106: All Things Amex Chat with CF Frost
Added 2020-12-15 22:45:45 +0000 UTCHilton Aspire No Fee Upgrade and All Things Amex w/CF Frost
Robert chats with Milenomics community member CF Frost about the recent Amex Hilton Aspire No Annual Fee upgrade offer, and all things Amex.
0:10 Amex Hilton Aspire No AF Upgrade
- Milenomics post
- Review the deal
- Theories on whether Amex actually will try to charge the AF despite the T&Cs saying they won’t
- If so, just downgrade for a prorated refund right?
13:50 Air Travel Credits/Clawbacks
- What are you doing now to take advantage of air travel/Hilton resort credits?
- Do you think that closing a card in early 2021 will trigger 2020 air travel credit clawback? So we are running the 2021 credits and canceling… were 2021 and 2020 credits refunded (ie how did we cash them out).
- Do you think there will be clawbacks on 1/1/2021 for air travel credits? Has this happened in the past? Literally on 1/1/21? What circumstances are we worried about
21:55 Card Limits
- Credit card limits 4 or 5?
- Charge card limits: 10 a real thing?
26:00 Application Timing
- Have you bumped into limits on approval of 2 Personal Platinum cards within a 90 day period?
- Thinking it’s relevant with late season Schwab applications
28:05 Referrals
- Once generated, does a referral link retain its characteristics even if the offer changes beneath you on that card? You being the referrer or the referee? Me being the referrer. Ie, if you generated the link when it was for 30k for referring, and that drops down to 10k - you still get 30k if the person applying went through the link that was created when the offer was 30k. Thinking of a “squirreling away” approach here and wanting to know that it’s actually effective.
- Do you think a +3x referral would still trigger +3x if used for an application now?
If so, think the link might still work Jan 1, 2021? Have you tried clicking a squirrled away 3FA link recently? Mine come up as dead, so i think they killed it Yes, my Personal Platinum link still works. Seems to depend on the card referring from. - Any theories on why some cards are ineligible for referral? Why referral values bounce around?
35:25 Card Management/Website
- Your tips for discerning which Amex cards were primary vs AU based on the digits was brilliant, thank you
- Do you add AU cards to your primary login?
- Do you have separate logins for each card?
- Have you seen the behavior when you have multiple of the same card that things like airline selection malfunction?
- I think I said on the show a while back that you can view your card number through Card Management, but that only appears to be the case when a new card is in transit, not for cards already activated. Is that what you see too?
45:55 Obscure Attributes of Various Platinum Cards
- 1.25 cpp Schwab cashout is pretty famous
- Evidently Morgan Stanley has a 1 cpp cashout?
- A couple shows back I think I mentioned some threshold for a fee reduction on the Morgan Stanley Platinum...I recall now that it’s $25k in cash management, $5k per month recurring and the timing of establishing the Morgan Stanley account and the new card application is important. See this post for more.
- What other quirky features are out there on Platinum cards that we don’t know about?
49:25 Amex Auto Purchasing Program
Thanks to CF Frost for stopping by and sharing his knowledge. Looking forward to continuing the conversation.
