Segaiden 71: Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

I always thought San Diego was in SoCal, just an hour or two north of Mexico. But here's Sega trying to gaslight (or maybe Gaslamp?) me into second-guessing myself. Rude.

Oh, wait, that's not Sega's doing. It's Parker Brothers. The audacity of these chumps! Daring to break the seal on third-party publishing for Master System all for the sake of leaving me wondering if I know the first thing about geography. Or currency. What the heck is a "franc" and a "lira," anyway?

This episode has a really high pitched whine throughout it, getting much louder around 5:10, that isn't present on previous ones. You might want to chuck a low-pass filter onto the audio track at something like 12~13KHz. Outstanding as always, and this looks like a really compelling take on the subject! Though I feel the original really tries to give the locations as much oomph as their limited color can give.

Yes, it was pretty clearly a joke, I thought. This ROM predates the adoption of the Euro and that is one of a fair few outdated bits of info in this version of the game

I know it's likely rhetorical but francs and lira were currency in France and Italy before the establishment of the Euro.

Finally. An explanation as to why Tonka jumped in the game.

I think Seismic stuck around until early in the GEN/MD era. They published MUSHA in the US

Not that it really has anything specific about the Master System era of video game publishing, but I really recommend Phil Orbanes’ book about the history of Parker Brothers, the Game Makers. Not only is it surprisingly interesting, it puts the chaos of their 1980s period into context pretty handily!

Mr. Parish: I am far, far, FAR behind in my YouTube queue, so I cannot comment on this particular episode. I just want to thank you for continuing your work on what is clearly a labor of love (why else would you do this?) The work you do is important, both for historical reasons, but also because you provide a sane oasis for those of us who are weary of the ever increasing insanity surrounding us. I would have sent this in a direct message if I knew how those worked on Patreon. Thank you again for your continuing “Works” series (saw a Gaiden episode about Atari games the other day…chef’s kiss), and for your work on Retronauts.

How in the hell have I gone my entire life without someone making that San Diego joke? 😅 Bravo, sir.
