Life would be better in the sense that all pretense would be dropped. You wouldn't be hurt because of lies but truth instead. With that being said I think lies and truth are two halves of the same coin like light and dark. They both have to exist or else life would be nothing but chaos which is where I think john lost himself.
Also I don't know if you paid much attention to what was going on the news but there was A LOT of chaos going on in the world. Not sure exactly how many people died or to what extent everything but I'm sure there was a lot of destruction.

You never know what you’re going to get when you press play on an episode of The Sandman, it was the same with the comic. This story is always unexpected, I wonder what you’ll get next time?
I think your point about masks we wear is very apropos. It’s a good read on the story. In John’s attempt to stop all lying he forced the people to drop their masks or what I think of as our fictions. The lies we tell ourselves about ourselves, they are necessary for us to continue to live to hope and to dream. Without these stories there is nothing to live for no reason to endure.
I loved how they adapted this episode, the comic was much more horrific and was really in your face about it. It’s a great issue, but it would have legit traumatized people in live action. The original was written by a young writer fully coming into his own as storyteller and looking to push the envelope and boy did he. But what they did here was better storytelling, drawing the tension out and giving the viewer time to get to know these people before we inflict horrors of humanity upon them was a smart move.
The Sandman was created by Neil Gaiman, he is th author of Neverwhere, Stardust, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Coraline, American Gods, Anasi Boys and co-author of Good Omens.
