Hiding a key in a doomed attempt to defeat a monster was a pretty big theme throughout the entire show, only rather than a physical key it was an encryption key (outside of hallucinations and dreams) until this episode.

2022-01-22 14:35:38 +0000 UTCYeah the key is in the Daemons episode from the first season (The one where Elliot was going through withdrawal and had all those dreams that you thought was him tripping on drugs) There's an E on the key for Elliot, maybe also for E Corp. Elliot's father is also called Edward so another E, and makes you wonder if Elliot projected some of that subconscious anger at his father onto E Corp with them being this monstrous entity of evil that he had no power over
