there's a lot of f-ed up stuff in this show but the lobotomy scene always disturbs me to my core

If you guys want to read a really goodbreakdown of the episode, check out Les Chappell's review from 2017. He always writes really insightful ones.

Idk seemed a bit hung or confused on how the episode was directed (both stories running parallel)

Additional thoughts about the awkward story telling: I think they tell us Beatrice’s story unrelated outside of location is so that we understand her in ways that Bojack doesn’t. To make sense of her hardness that he takes so personally and doesn’t understand so he takes it so personally. He never sees her.

Thanks! Watching Bojack at his lowest; freezing while watching the American girl show about Sarah Lynn; the momenta after he took her to the hospital was really tragic. Suffering with guilt and regrets about how everything turned out.

Bojack is so great at subverting common narrative tropes. You definitely don't expect him to destroy what he just spent 8 months rebuilding. Loving your reactions and can't wait to go through the journey of S4, 5, and 6 with you!

I agree with your explanation of the purpose of this episode and why Bojack tore down the shrine to the past that he had built with Eddie. Well said!

Man, of all the episodes, this was one of the ones I was looking forward to an extended conversation on. Top 5 episode for the series in my opinion. Masterpiece territory.

Wow, after a long day of reacting to a bunch of other shows; some of which also pulls on emotional strings; ending with Bojack has to be rough during episodes like this. Thanks for the hours you two put in so we can share these experiences together!
Generational curses can be tough to break and the cycle of how they are passed down is sad. Beatrice was a sweet little girl but seeing her mother lobotomized like that definitely traumatized her. Her mother told her not to love anyone as much as she loved Crackerjack and seeing how her feelings are towards Buttersotch (though of course he's no saint) and young Bojack, she seems to have engrained that lesson inside her. Looking back at this episode knowing how it turns out; its interesting how they incorporated the phrase "i have half a mind" along with the commonalities of early 1900s sexist / patriarchal society.
Bojack came here to hide from himself and his depression over Sarah Lynn's death but much like his grandmother with his uncle's death; it has cut him deeply. Still rather then be like the Dragonfly in unending grief over his wife; Bojack tore down his place of sorrow and forced himself to move forward as time's arrow does.

Oh man, A Place Beyond The Pines is great! Looking forward to it. I believe you two had brought up generational trauma a few episodes ago. This episode is laying the groundwork for that and the rest of the season.
