2020-11-27 04:48:40 +0000 UTCHe has a keen, tactical mind and is a great warrior, things that Guthred needed, but once again the fact that Uhtred's a dane with power and popularity makes him a target for devious and envious men like Eadred. The silver lining is that Hild has informed Alfred of this and while he can't send men to find Uhtred. He can make use of his Dane hostages Brida & Ragnar to join with Hild and search for Uhtred unofficially.

As Aelfric said to Brother Trew that he would only give fealty to Guthred if he had the head of Uhtred. Also without Uhtred's leadership how will Guthred's army take Dunholm back from Kjartan. Uhtred was able stop his men from abducting him and sent their heads back to Kjartan including his lieutenant Tekil's which led to another of his men, Fiske getting beheaded.

Unfortunately Guthred is a impressionable and weak willed person so he was manipulated by Abbot Eadred to think that Uhtred's popularity and charisma made him a threat to his rule as he could easily become king if he so wished according to the Abbot.

Unfortunately the dangers of this time means that kings rarely left their seats of power. Which is why Alfred can't just ride up to Cumberland to stop the treachery that went down in the episode. Uhtred & Halig being betrayed by Guthred and sold into slavery is hard to watch as Uhtred is responsible for giving Guthred a new lease on life.

At this time Alfred is the most powerful King as Wessex is the only Saxon ruled kingdom that has couple of victories under it's belt. The death of Ubba & the defeat of Guthrum at Ethandun has weakened the Danish leadership. Which has put the Saxons in a better position to strengthen their power in the south while the Danes have taken a beating but still hold power in the north.
