Also by the way Carla's "he's already special because he was born into this world" line is one of the most important lines in the series and plays a big part in the story's themes. Just like how the idea of special people has always played a big theme in the story ever since season 1 with Annie, her idea of special people were people who went against the flow like Eren and Marlowe who have the courage to do it. Meanwhile she said she only sees herself as a normal person who just gets swept up in the flow of things. She talked about this a lot more in the manga which I wish they hadn't cut out

I hope you read the comments on these vids otherwise typing al lthis might be rather pointless but I'll just back up what other people said. Its shown in the manga but the reason Keith messed with Eren's gear is because he thought Eren was only becoming a soldier because its what his father wanted for him. Meanwhile Carla as shown in episode 1 of the anime when she found out Eren wanted to join the survey corps was completely against him going outside the walls and fighting titans because she didn't want her son to throw his life away. So Keith was trying to protect Eren from becoming a soldier for Carla's sake. Also the whole curse thing that Keith talks about is because the reason he got his whole inferiority complex about special people is because its what Grisha told him when they first met that he was a chosen one. Which boosted Keith's ego only to have it crash down on him when he realised he wasn't this 'special' individual Grisha had made him out to be hence why he blames Grisha. So him asking Grisha if he was gonna curse Eren as well was him saying are you gonna convince Eren into thinking he's special when he's actually not. Which has been a huge part of Eren's arc this season as shown with how he was reflecting in the earlier episodes that he had begun to believe he was special because he was titan powers just to have that idea crushed just like Keith once he found out he wasn't special and he was just randomly given the power by his dad after he murdered an entire family including children to obtain it. This is why Eren had been acting gloomy and kinda depressed for the past couple episodes. Its only once Keith tells him what his mother had said that he didn't need to be special or great because he already was simply because "he was born into this world".

In the manga it was more clear, Keith says "How did I end up overestimating myself this much? Oh that's right, it was because of you (Grisha)"

I think he tampered with Eren's gear because he didn't believe that Eren was special and wanted to protect him from going out and dying. But when he saw Eren's resolve overcome the broken gear he realized that Eren could achieve something greater than he himself achieved. All in all, the most important thing to take away from this episode is that Eren has finally come to terms with himself. "He is special because he was born into this world". His self doubts are finally cleared.

in the end Shadis saw eren's determination to become a scout that led him to make eren pass. He could have made eren fail also but chose not to. He did make a difference but in a symbolic way he was bystander and a lot of people in real life feel like him. That's why the mom said what's wrong with not being special coz we need to consider ourselves already lucky to be born in this world which is a very powerful message,

It was elaborated a bit more in the manga, but the reason why Shadis broken Eren's gear was because he felt that Eren was only trying to become a soldier because it was what his father wanted, and he didn't want Eren to end up like himself if he ever realized that he wasn't special. Also, Shadis knew that Carla didn't want Eren to join the Survey Corps, so he was also trying to fulfill her last wish.
