Snakes are relatively simple, so I focused on head shape and comparative anatomy. It turns out their actual "tail" is pretty short, and they sort of have a massively long ribcage.
I also did some experimental tests with drawing scales and scale growth. I don't really love any of the methods I tried, but it's a tricky thing to make look nice without painstakingly illustrating each scale. More experimentation is definitely warranted!
The species I've decided to work with is the Gray Ratsnake.
Fun Facts:
Most snakes only have one functional lung.
some species retain vestigial leg bones or claws around the cloaca.
They don't have ears, but are extremely sensitive to vibrations and can essentially hear with their skin.
They have solid pee!
