The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition - Full Length Reaction

it's time IT'S TIME!! we're finally getting into The Lord of the Rings - I've been so excited to watch these.

YES - we're watching the extended editions! because of that, the Youtube edits will be broken up into two parts - so it might be a little longer between full length reactions on the Patreon while we're watching LOTR.

at the end of the video, I mentioned that I might let myself process some of this more and then add some additional commentary once I'm done editing. if I do end up filming more commentary, then I will also add that onto this full length reaction, and will re-upload to this same post!

hope you're as excited as me, and can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts!

The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition - Full Length Reaction

Comments

Huge time stamp is not warranted and interfers with watching this reaction.

Great reaction. I am glad when you cut away a few times you maintained perfect sync with the movie so it never put us out of sync. I will add, and this may just be me, but I don't use the counter as sometimes the start of a reactor's video differs from ours. Case in point here, your version starts with the HBO max logo, mine doesn't so already your time is not matching my timer. Most important is the blurred image that allows perfect syncing. I also noticed that sometimes your head got a little too close to the blurred image and I feared it would duck behind it. You have a lot of dead space on the right to allow moving you head a little bit away from that blurred window. You may not have noticed but you recently watched the actor playing the Elf lord Elrond, he was the man behind the mask in V. Of course LOTR came out decades before Potter so Frodo isn't like Potter, Potter is like Frodo. Gandalf isn't like Dumbledore, Dumbledore is like Gandalf lol.

What happens when a character puts on the Ring is not super well explained in the movies. They are shown as becoming invisible (though I understand how it could be perceived as teleporting on a first watch) but even that is not quite accurate. What it does is shift the wearer from the visible world to the "unseen" world. While that might seem like invisibility, it actually makes it easier for the wraiths to see him because they see much clearer in the unseen world than in the visible world. Some creatures/races in Middle Earth exist in both worlds. The only time this is really shown is at Weathertop when Frodo puts on the ring, he sees the version of the wraiths as they exist in the unseen world, and he is clearly not invisible to them. Some Elves also have this trait where they are present in both worlds, which is why Arwen appears so ethereal to Frodo when she first finds them after he was stabbed. He had begun transitioning to a wraith so his vision was able to see the version of her that exists in the unseen world.

Here and ready to go. I became aware of your channel from Addie's channel and the great Hangover. One tip if you are not already doing it is to mention or post the runtime of the movie. The reason is sometimes there are different versions of movies that even the reactor is not aware of and runtime makes it easy for us to determine which version you are watching.

Andrew Roach

Thank you for the clarification.

Personally, i think it's okay to answer questions that a reactor has during a first-time viewing, as long as the answers were depicted in this movie. For "The Lord of the Rings" and other films based on literary works I think we should keep to a minimum the stuff that was in the books but aren't included in the films - that's too much exposition. For example, in Mario Puzo's novel, "The Godfather", there is a reference to Al Capone that was not in the movie.

ButtercupsTrueLove

Orcs and Goblins are the same thing in Tolkien's world, just different names for the same thing.

Rippan

The creatures they were fighting in the mine coffin room were Orcs (and a cave troll). The creatures in the great hall were Goblins.

LotR: FotR - what I've done is taken YT Channel: @ListeningIn video: "The Lord of the Rings - How Howard Shore Uses Voices" - cut the beginning of it (1st min) which is the first chapter: "Of the beginning of days" from "The Silmarillion" (1977) and put it at the front of FotR. Well, technically a frame after "Wingnut films" is where I insert it; right before the 'choirs.' I waited for 20 years for Peter Jackson to bring LotR to life. I've been waiting for +40 years now for someone to bring Chapter 19: "Of Beren and Lúthien" from the book "The Silmarillion" (1977) to life. Probably thee greatest Adventure/Love story ever written!

My personal favorite Fun fact, did you know you can in fact mind your own buisness? Who knew! That one is cool. She asked about things and seemed somewhat unsure of other topics. So I threw some answers out there.

Wreckingballryan

Let her watch the movies for god sake no need for the detail that most people don't event remember ....

J.R.R. Tokien = John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. His education: First Class Honors degree in English Language and Literature from Exeter College, Oxford in 1915. He also received a Master of Arts degree in 1919. He was an English writer and philologist (study of language in oral and written historical sources). His first work which evolves "Middle Earth" is a poem which he started in 1914: "The Voyage of Earendel" but it is the 'foundation' of the universe called "Arda"; where "Middle Earth" is. He created the entire universe, with a supreme being named: "Eru IlΓΊvatar." He created everything in this universe, including at least 15 languages. An epic work to say the least. Thing is anytime you hear of an Orc, Dwarf and especially Elves, all of these are based upon his works over 110 years ago. Tolkien is thee "Founder" of all High Fantasy and with LotR considered Epic Fantasy. There are similarities but Rowlings' Harry Potter and Tolkiens' LotR; but Rowlings' work didn't start till 1990; whereas Tolkiens' started in 1914. The ring is similar to a Horcrux; in that it has a part of Sauron, but soo much more. It is also alive; it wants to be found. "Agents of the dark lord will be drawn to it's power." "It abandoned Gollum." It can only be destroyed in one location - the fiery lava of Mount Doom. When Frodo puts on the One Ring, he is 'transferred' into the "Unseen"/"Spirit"/"Wraith" world; and therefore becomes invisible within the 'real'/'normal'/'seen' world. The movie doesn't explain it at all, but only shows 'changes in scenery.' IE: The Wraths are seemingly clothed in 'a ghostly fashion' with their clothing flowing as if in water. Arwen 'appearing as a glowing being dressed in a white dress' as Frodo see's her approaching. Then she appears to be wearing 'normal cloths' from Sam and Aragorns' perspective.

Randolph Tirazona

That was a super cool reaction. I enjoyed it very much. Thanks, Camilla.

Lee Pitman

Yup, I figured it out too with a little bit of effort. Thanks, Camilla!

Phil Stubblefield

Yup, those are two of the best lines in this movie, which is chock full of great lines!

Phil Stubblefield

Couple of things you mentioned that I thought I might clarify, cause it can be real confusing. The ring doesn't attract people because they are hungry for power, it toys with your ambition and your desires. Boromir isn't hungry for power so much as he is desperate to save his people. The ring is making him think that the best way to do that is to take it. Frodo is less effected by the ring because Hobbits aren't very ambitious, they are mostly content to live and let live. Near the beginning you mentioned Elves being shorter than humans, those elves are usually celtic myth. They're tricky little guys that'll tell you riddles. Tolkein's elves are based more on Norse mythology, They're taller funcionally immune to aging, and more in tune with nature. They also tell you riddles, but it isnt a test so much as it's just the way they talk. Wizards are neither human nor elves in Tolkien's work, they are essentially angels that take human form. There are only five of them, their job is to advise the races of middle earth in their fight against evil. The Balrog is basically the same kind of Angel but evil. Thats why Gandalf calls it a demon. Unfortunately Gandalf does in fact die. The mines were abandoned by the dwarves a few thousand years ago, the dwarves you see are from an expedition to retake the mine lead by Gimli's cousin. They succeeded for a while but ultimately failed. Dwarves and Elves don't generally get along. Elves think Dwarves are smelly, rude, and hostile little cave dwellers. Dwarves think Elves are pompous, arrogant fools too busy hugging trees and frolicking in fields to do anything worth doing. Both are kinda right. Gimli asking for hair from Galadriel does seem wierd in today's context. Originally it was a sign of favor. Galadriel's hair also glows brightly. In the book I believe Gimli says he is going to set the hairs in amber and they will become an heirloom of his family. There is a lot of significance to this because of an event in the lore that I wont talk about because it doesn't matter all that much right now. Boromir's father is the Steward of Gondor (the main kingdom of Men) the steward acts as king in the King's absence. There hasn't been a king in generations, Aragorn is the heir to that throne. Thats all I can think of for the moment.

Wreckingballryan

Enjoyed your reaction. Awesome movie. AFI Top 100 movie. You don't get to the end until the end of the 3rd movie. I can see where some might see Harry Potter characters as derivative of LOTR characters. Glad you reacted to the extended cut. Flies by. I love the LOTR trilogy. The Fellowship of the Ring is excellent. The Two Towers and The Return of the King are even better. I sympathize with your information overload. "I would have followed you, my brother, my captain, my king" "Be at peace, Son of Gondor."

Clay F

Just finished. Loved that you went in knowing nothing and were able to follow along so well. There's so much going on and so much thrown at you constantly but it sets up a great story. Love the Harry Potter connections you made, too. I'm a huge fan of that series as well. Tolkien wrote his books 70 years ago (in 1954) and basically created the fantasy genre as we know it today. Nearly everyone who has ever done anything even remotely fantasy related was inspired in some way by Lord of the Rings.

dave

Thank you for your efforts.

ButtercupsTrueLove

agh I apologize! I've fixed it though, a new version is uploading now and will replace the old version once its finished - thank you!!

camilla

The elapsed time clock kept running when Camilla left the room for a few minutes and I *think* she paused the movie but I'm not sure - I didn't catch what she said when she got up from her seat. I was able to re-sync when Bilbo tried to frighten Frodo into letting him hold the ring one last time, but then lost sync again sometime later. Might try again later.

ButtercupsTrueLove

Yooooo(!) it’s 2:39am here but I’m skipping sleep for this. πŸ˜†πŸ™ŒπŸ» Let’s goo!

Let the LOTR journey begin!

Alex Tan

Awesome. Can't wait to watch this tomorrow.

Lee Pitman

Okay, good - Camilla's watching on HBO MAX. Just previewed enough to know how to watch later.
