Thanks! And I love 'Her', I haven't seen it for yearsss but I was really into that film. I remember at the time thinking that kind of phenomenon didn't feel too far off and we haven't quite got there yet, so maybe we're further off from this stuff than I'd imagine 😅 Interesting to hear there was someone involved from the original writing team in this, that tracks.

I'm with you on liking this film more than the first, as much as I love the original. I think 2049 has such a confidence and self-assuredness about the way it tackles and really dives deep into the key themes of what it means to be alive from so many angles, and it's solidified for me as one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. Villeneuve is a master, and has a particular knack for high-brow sci-fi, so he was the perfect choice of director, and Roger Deakins' cinematography is stunning. Interestingly, one of the screenplay's co-writers, Hampton Fancher, also co-wrote the original - I think this is why it feels like such a natural continuation despite the production gap. Not to mention how much we've progressed as a society in the intervening years, especially in regard to AI and its evolving role, for better or worse. The themes now comprise not merely the “real” and manufactured, but the virtual as well. Side note: K's relationship with Joi is very reminiscent to me of the beautiful Spike Jonze film "Her", which I love, and definitely recommend if that interests you. This was a great commentary! I always appreciate your analyses. Thanks :)
