Preview of "Lace on the Mattress"
Added 2024-11-30 21:43:10 +0000 UTCI do have a preview of a short story I need to get back to. Since I'll be flying through Atlanta next Wednesday on my way to MFF, it's appropriate to offer this sample.
The jolting of the wheels of the plane touching down woke up Karll from his slumber. The coyote gave out a startled yip before he realized where he was. Thankfully, only his immediate seat mates noticed as the roar of the engines going to full power as the thrust reversers kicked in drowned out the sound.
Ears plastered back, Karll waited as the plane slowed down, and the cabin noise level dropped, before lifting the window shutter to see if he could see anything. Outside it was dark, and only the lights of the airport were easily discernible. He fished into his pants pocket and pulled out his cell phone. It said 4:00 AM. He carefully slid a clawed finger up to unlock the device, and he turned back on the cellular service. A few seconds later, the time updated to the local time, 10:00 PM.
They were only two hours late arriving, but he’d made it. He imagined a lot of people on the plane had connections they’d missed, but this was thankfully his final destination. He couldn’t wait to get to his hotel room. Outside of the fitful sleep he’d gotten on the flight, he’d been awake for way too long. He’d get some good sleep soon, but he just needed to navigate customs and get his luggage first.
He leaned back onto his seat and yawned, long tongue rolling out. The plane bumped along the taxiway, and the coyote just wanted to go doze back off. His tail hurt from hours of sitting on it, and he was ready to finally stretch it out. Hopefully the lines as passport control wouldn’t be too bad, and they were getting a gate in the international terminal.
