In the Fullness of Time - Part Five

This is part of a short story I wrote using my solo RPG, Spooky Action at a Distance. This was generated using an earlier version of the game, so the results of the rolls might not line up to the version available now. However I still think this is a neat example of the kinds of stories that can be told with this game.

Session 4

Roll Result: 8 - The envoy does something reckless

Notes from Envoy Burgess’ Personal Journal

Security council meetings have been happening for days now. No one can come to a consensus. We should have done something by now, we could have had multiple sessions. The alien keeps sending proxies. They all wait around 3 to 5 minutes and then the connection is severed like usual. Debriefing and processing for these proxies is brief, thankfully. They don’t seem to suffer as much as those who have to speak half a dozen different languages at once.

That’s when I had the thought. Why doesn’t the alien just take me? It would make all this so much easier.

And that’s when I think it happened. Everything went black and green and purple, like I was stuck inside a kaleidoscope. There was the feeling of weightlessness and I was never sure if I was floating or falling, very much unlike the experience of zero-g.

Finally I was on Earth again. It was a green field that ended with a bluff at one end, overlooking what I believe was the Atlantic Ocean, the other horizon was taken up by rolling hills. It looked like England but I cannot be sure.

There, in the field was an older woman, maybe in her sixties. She spoke with a slight American accent.

“You wanted to talk?” she asked.

I asked what she had done with me. The proxy shrugged. “You were frustrated with being unable to communicate. I was also frustrated. This felt like a good solution. I could send you back if you’d like.”

“No,” I said quickly. “No, how… how did you do this? How did you know what I was thinking?”

“When I wish to, I can hear thoughts. When I wish to, I can place you wherever I would like.”

I thought a long time about this. “Maybe you shouldn’t have. People… the rest of the crew, they are very concerned about your abilities. This will worry them even more. ”

The old woman looked at me. “What did you want to know?”

“Why are you here? Why are you doing this?”

“I need energy. You call it sustenance and eating. That is what I am doing here.”

“Have you done it before, are there others like us out there?”

“No. Not with you. And no, there are no others like you.”

I shook my head, frustrated. I wasn’t sure if the alien was understanding my questions.

“You should send me back.”

“Alright.” And then I was in the kaleidoscope again. And then I was back in my room on the ship.

Questions: What is the alien’s intent? They are here to feed off of us by possessing and teleporting us for brief periods.

What is the alien’s technology? They have apparent god-like powers, able to read thoughts, perceive things despite barriers, and manipulate matter.
