If I had to guess, probably because Gohan is strong enough to help him gather the dragon balls while being young and naive enough to manipulate. 11:33 "Does she know how to kick anyone in the butt?" She has a gun, but it's not very effective against the level of enemies they fight, as is demonstrated when Krillin tanks a gatling gun to the face later on. She could probably create a weapon that would be effective against strong enemies, but it would require a lot of time and effort to research. She's not very interested in spending her time on that when she has Goku for the things guns can't kill.
