me again, binging everything you have. surprisingly i made it all the way to the 6th movie before saying something. BUT the scene with draco and harry on the train just shows us how lucky we were that he didn’t really want to be on voldemorts side. he is fully capable of being evil and diabolical if he wants to. 😳
also, harry and dumbledore did indeed have to swim into the cavern. there was magic preventing them from apparating straight in. harry noted that dumbledore had a “surprisingly nimble breaststroke”, so imagine that however you will 🤣

I'm so glad you pointed out Frank Dillane's acting in this film! (young voldemort who asks about the horcruxes). Even though he has a really small role, i've always thought his acting was so good in those scenes with slughorn.
He also played Nick in 'fear the walking dead' if u've seen that? I had to share this little fact cuz i couldn't believe it when i found out. I never would've recognised him if someone else hadn't told me.

Yeah the love potion stuff did not age well... Well, I would hope it was pretty unacceptable at the time too, but I do think our understanding of consent has come a ways in the last however many years since the book was written. Love potions come up a few times in the books and are mostly treated as comedic. We also only hear about women using them on men. Take from that what you will.

Guys I’m late, but I just wanted to point out that Narcissa Malfoy was played by Helen McCrory. She also played Polly Gray in Peaky FOCKEN Blinders. I love her. She’s such a bad ass as Polly.

In the books, Ginny was a badass. I hate the way they portrayed her in the movies-very one demential with not a lot to offer. This girl ran through fire to fight along side Harry AND held her own fighting against Bellatrix. Also, the Burrow burning didn’t happen in the books. I guess Hollywood decided there could only be one strong female protagonist.

I feel so sorry for Slughorn during the Ron poisoning. He is confused on how it happened and looked like a tired sad old man.

"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and above all, those who live without love." -- Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore
And I can feel your LOVE for this series! As usual, you boys don't disappoint. I could actually feel your pain and relived a little of it myself having not seen this one in a couple of years. Tears were shed!
You are truly great at what you do. It does make me wish I could go back and see all of these movies again (for the first time), but as a fan of HP...they age very well! It will be cool when your children get their wands for the first time. (P.S. If you have an Apple phone, you can say "hey Siri LUMOS!" to turn on your flashlight and "Hey Siri NOX!" to turn it off). Fun parlor trick!
Love you guys!

In case no one’s mentioned it, the money Fred and George used to open their joke shop actually came from Harry. It’s not shown in the movies, but at the end of Goblet of Fire, Harry won a big cash prize for the Triwizard Tournament. He didn’t want anything to do with it. Around the same time, Fred and George had been trying to save up to start their shop but lost all their savings to Ludo Bagman (the Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports—he’s not in the films). They’d placed a bet with him on the Quidditch World Cup, won it, but Bagman couldn’t pay them back—he’d taken their money upfront and never returned it. The twins spend most of the book scheming ways to get it back. So Harry quietly gave them his prize money, pretty much insisted on it, and made them swear never to tell Mrs. Weasley that he was the one who funded the joke shop.

The books do a muuuch better job of developing HarryxGinny relationship.. Ginny almost feels like a different person in the movies, not her fiery self from the books.

You guys just have the best Harry Potter reactions! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the final 2 films. But there’s a very brief conversation that you passed over in this one that is very significant. I don’t think I can point it out without hinting at a major spoiler, so 🤐 Frustrating! 😅

I highly recommend the books. The movies are lovely, but they did have to leave a fair bit out. Many secondary characters like Ginny aren’t properly developed in the movies.

This was my favorite book. I always loved the Dumbledore/Harry scenes and we got so much of it in this one. However, the movie is a bit of a mix bag for me. I find the romance storylines to be poorly written and executed, but I like the rest. I thought we should have had more of the Voldemort memories as well.
When I read the chapter of Snape meeting with Bellatrix and Narcissa I remember thinking that JK Rowling wasn't going to trick me into thinking Snape is bad again. When he shows up on the tower at the end I was actually happy because I thought there was some hope. I was so scared for Dumbledore. Then he kills him. One of the biggest twists and I should have seen it coming because of the unbreakable vow. So I guess she did trick me. Looking forward to seeing your reactions to the final films!

You guys in the books you get to see Harry’s battling his feelings for Ginny more in the books once you guys read the books it starts to make sense as to why Ginny and Harry ended up together in the movies . The director and the writers did a poor job at telling their romance
autumn
2025-04-22 00:17:59 +0000 UTC
also, i think most people would agree with y'all: ginny and harry's romance in the HBP movie was poorly developed. however, in the book ginny has more of a personality and you get to see harry's feelings for her more since you're in his head! but overall i think it's agreed that JKR doesn't write romance that well lol

Yeah, pretty much my only major issue with the films as an adaptation is how they botched the Ginny/Harry romance and her character in general. I hope the new series corrects this mistake. And you guys said some interesting things I dearly want to comment on but won't just in case you haven't had a chance to record your reaction to the final two films yet, because I don't want to spoil anything. Loved the reaction, and looking forward to the final two! <3
P.S. I understand the attraction to Bellatrix, despite the fact she's AWFUL. Film Bellatrix makes me glad I'm into dudes, because I think otherwise I'd be very into crazy women, and that doesn't end well for anyone involved :D

When I first saw this before reading all the books, watching Harry go from Cho Chang to asking out the waitress to Ginny was serious whiplash. The movies portrayed the Harry x Ginny dynamic terribly. It's way more built up and obvious in the books from what I remember. (Not to mention Daniel and Bonnie had zero chemistry imo).

this is also definitely the funniest movie lmao. a bit sad but daniel had a bit of a drinking problem during the latter films, and i think he said he was actually kind of drunk for most of the liquid luck scenes, but he's so funny throughout this entire movie lol.

When I first read that scene, I put the book down and cried for about an hour. I've cried while reading before, and had to stop for a few minutes due to blurry vision, but this is the only book I recall where I had to stop reading to sob uncontrollably for an hour while I considered not finishing the series at all. Not because it wasn't good, but because it was too painful.

It's barely touched on in the movies so it's not a spoiler, but yes we know who Voldemort's parents are. His dad was a muggle & his mother, a witch, used a love potion on him. That's why he can't feel love, he was conceived under a love spell. Fun fact: Little Tom Riddle was played by grown Voldemort, Ralph Fienne's real nephew. Another fun fact: Harry saving Ron with a bezoar is a callback to the 1st film where Snape cruelly quizzed Harry on how to use a bezoar to save from poison. Not so fun fact: The werewolf death eater is also a pedophile in the book. His scenes will definitely hit different now that you know. 😬

the books do a much better job at slowly developing the harry x ginny relationship; their dynamic is such a good slow burn and based on so much friendship and mutual respect. ginny is just 10x better in the books too; they really water down her personality in the movies. she's so badass in the books. her running after harry in the fire is the most truly book ginny moment. this is why i ship movie harry and movie hermione but book harry and book ginny lol.

So I just wanted to add a little backstory that isn't explained in the movie. Snape reveals himself to be the Half-Blood Prince, but in the book we find out that his mother, whose name was Eileen Prince, was a witch. His father, however, was a Muggle. Sooo...half-blood.
Someone else gave Voldemort's backstory in a different comment, but I would just say that while I love this movie, I do wish they'd been able to incorporate more of the memory flashback scenes pertaining to Voldemort's past. There you find out the significance of the ring and locket that Voldemort chooses to uses as Horcruxes.
As far as Harry and Ginny go, they've definitely hinted at it for the past couple movies, at least on Ginny's side. If you rewatch Order of the Phoenix, there are a few moments where Ginny clocks Harry and Cho making googly eyes at one another and her reaction isn't exactly warm and fuzzy. That said, I don't feel any chemistry between Daniel Radcliffe and Bonnie Wright. I'm sure it wouldn't have been easy for the casting director to know if they would have chemistry or not when the actors were originally cast as children, but it's definitely a little cringe.
In the books it was better, but they still weren't a favorite for me.

Imagine you're 10 and the new Harry Potter book just came out and you spent the whole night reading non stop barely being able to keep your eyes open anymore and then Snape kills Dumbledore. Most inconsolable I've been in my life lol
Also you guys are so right about the Harry/Ginny relationship. The book goes much more into it and it doesn't feel so out of nowhere. The movies kinda really butcher that (and Ginny's whole character tbh), but I guess you just can't fit everything into the time you have to work with.

sorry for another (and potentially long) comment, but even though you were wrong about voldemort being the half blood prince, you were right about him being a half blood. book spoilers below if you guys are planning on reading them, as this info is not touched on in the movies.
voldemort is the child of tom riddle sr, a muggle, and merope gaunt, a witch. merope gave tom, who did not love her, a love potion and conceived a child with him under it. that child was voldemort. being born from a love potion, he is unable to feel or experience love. a few years after he was born, merope decided to stop giving tom sr the love potion, thinking that he would stay after it wore off. it did not, and he left them both, and i believe merope died shortly after which is why voldemort ended up in the orphanage where dumbledore found him. he grew up hating muggles bc of his father abandoning him and his views became so extreme that he wants to kill all muggles and muggleborn witches/wizards

this is probably my favorite harry potter movie besides prisoner of azkaban! only 10 minutes in and this is already a fun one. i really feel for draco in this one, he’s truly just a kid who doesn’t want to die/have his family be hurt or killed. my dad absolutely loves the moment between ron and harry with the potion books lmao
