Dunno if it’s been said yet, but Lupin is not usually a danger to people, there’s a special wolfsbane potion he takes before every full moon. He still turns, but he keeps his own mind so he doesn’t attack. With everything going on, he forgot to take it and that’s why he turned. Also! The whomping willow was planted because of Lupin going to Hogwarts. Dumbledore created the secret passage from under the tree to the shack so Lupin would have somewhere safe to hide while he wolfed out, and the tree is a defense so no student would accidentally stumble into him while he was a werewolf. Also it’s was Snape who ‘let it slip’ that Lupin was a werewolf so he would get fired.
