Chapter 482

The following morning Ajax, Lexi and Xavier were sharing a carriage as they headed towards Lessis. Ajax expected that the manor of his estate would have at least a section of it finished so his family would move in and that they would continue the work while he would also start finishing up all the secret passages. For now however he had something else to focus on.

[Sense Mana], [Expel Mana], [Mana Skin], [Mana Augmentation] and [Inspector’s Eye] were all waiting for him to make his selection on their threshold bonuses. For [Sense Mana] and [Expel Mana] they were even more important since this would be the only threshold bonus they would have, though Ajax did suspect there would be another when they capped out at level one hundred and fifty.

His first few choices had been easy. All of his Mana skills were a simple selection of increased mana potency, the same selection he had made for his Rare mana affinities something that was just cemented as a correct choice during his fight with the beholder and realizing how important the potency of mana was for a spell.

[Mana Skin] was the first one he focused on. He had three different options.

[MANA SKIN] ADVANCEMENT OPTIONS :

Upfront payment : Allows up to one thousand mana to be stored into [Mana Skin], skill will remain active until the skill is broken. Upon breaking the skill will become unavailable for one hour.

Filtration : Allows filtration of harmful substances. (Filtering out harmful substances will cause damage to the skin based on the potency of the substance costing mana to uphold.)

Vigilance(tied to skill [Danger Sense]): while unconscious skill will activate in reflex to [Danger Sense].

All three options had something going for them. Upfront payment allowed Ajax to save one thousand mana before heading into a fight and use it all to power [Mana Skin]. This wasn’t the most efficient use considering the skill’s efficiency but it was a lot of mana, the value would only increase as the skill got stronger and its efficiency increased. Though losing access to a Skill wasn’t something he had known was possible.

Filtration would give Ajax a way to deal with airborne poisons, more than that it could also prove useful in his alchemy. His only worry was how would the filtration work? Would it be based on his knowledge allowing him to select what was filtered out, would it be reactive filtering out anything harmful. The second option presented a quick way to drain his own mana depending on how hard the skill would be hampered by anything extremely potent.

Vigilance was the option that looked most favorable to Ajax. It wouldn’t affect the way the skill currently worked in his style but it did come with a powerful addition of protecting him even when he wasn’t conscious. Being tied to only an Uncommon skill did have its drawbacks as powerful and high leveled assassination skills would bypass it but if it could even buy him a moment that might be enough.

In the end Ajax went with Vigilance. There were many other ways he could prepare before a fight that would be more efficient than Upfront payment and Filtration was too big of an unknown to take a chance on. With his decision made he moved on to [Mana Augmentation]

[MANA AUGMENTATION] ADVANCEMENT OPTIONS :

Preservation : lowers damage to infused objects by half.

Brawler : allows augmentation of your own body. (harmful affinities will cause damage to your own body)

Matched augmentation : increases potency of augmentation when channeled through a mana gem of matching affinity.

Delayed increase : allows to increase the mana infused in an augmentation up to double until the point of use.

Unlike [Mana Skin] it was easy for Ajax to remove two of the choices. Both Preservation and Brawler were not all that useful for him. He had already been focusing on a different work around that was better than Preservation and brawler could almost be replicated by simply augmenting his armor.

Matched augmentation seemed perfect for his plans. He was already going to focus on matching large mana gems with specific weapons to better bring out his affinities. That only left Delayed increase to consider.

The final option would steer Ajax away from his current fighting style by focusing on his bow and arrows a lot more. Unlike his melee weapons where Ajax could always increase the power since he was in contact his arrows didn’t have that option and missing was a real possibility. This would have been the clear choice should getting his hands on mana gems been an issue.

With Matched augmentation selected Ajax moved on to [Expel Mana].

[EXPEL MANA] ADVANCEMENT OPTIONS :

Size control : allows better control of large Mana released.

Overcharge : allows larger amounts of Mana to be released at once.

It wasn’t all that surprising to see he had so little choice when it came to [Expel Mana], it was an Uncommon skill that he used as a basis for his other skills. It was simply a choice of if he wanted to have better control over his larger spells or even larger spells.

Ajax asked Lexi for her input on the matter since the choice wasn’t clear.

“It’s more a question of what you want to focus on.” Lexi answered. “You can make up for the other choice with training. You can eventually increase how much mana you can output and you can also work on your control of large mana amounts. I would suggest going for Overcharge since you can work on your control with the help of the staff. That way you won’t constantly be using up your own Mana just to unleash large spells to push your limits.”

Ajax found himself agreeing with Lexi’s logic. More than that however while both options were good until he had gained his staff control had never been that big of a problem for him, spell size limit however had come back to bite him a time or two. Even if Size control could help him to better use the ettin’s staff in the short term Oversize was simply the better choice.

[Sense Mana]’s choices weren’t even close.

[SENSE MANA] ADVANCEMENT OPTIONS :

Radial increase: increases the range of the skill

Focused detail : increases the focus of the skill allowing to better sense the form and affinity of the Mana.

Ajax selected Focused detail without hesitation. As much as he would have liked Radial increase, especially now that he was fighting stronger and stronger opponents the range limit on his [Sense Mana] did leave him open to surprise attacks from long ranged focused opponents it simply didn’t compare with Focused detail.

Focused detail would first and foremost help Ajax with analyzing other Mana types. Increased detail would help him better mimic them with his own Mana control to recreate them and hopefully gain the affinities. That wasn’t saying anything of how much it would help with his alchemy, especially now that he was starting to use more mana dense ingredients that didn’t have perfect instruction due to how often substitutes needed to be used in recipes due to availability of ingredients, this often left it to the alchemists skill to balance everything and mana was one of the hardest things to balance.

Ajax’s final skill was [Inspector’s Eye].

[INSPECTOR’S EYE] ADVANCEMENT OPTIONS :

Piercing glare : increases potency to better pierce privacy Skills.

Natural breakdown(Synergises with [Alchemist's Examination]) : increases detail in regards to natural makeup of objects and being as well as their use regarding [Alchemy]

Predator’s focus (Synegises with [Judge Threat] and [Spot Weakness]) : increases insight regarding strength and weaknesses of an opponent.

Unlike his other skills each of [Inspector’s Eye]’s options went towards a different part of his life. Piercing glare would be ideal for politics allowing him to bypass privacy skills and get a better grasp of who he is dealing with.

Natural breakdown would be the perfect choice for his alchemy. With the increased need to work with what you have rather than hoping for exact reagents this would save him a lot of time and reagents by letting him see and glaring issues with certain combinations.

Predator’s focus was the natural combat selection and the choice Ajax was leaning towards. It didn;t have so much to do with [Judge Threat] as he rarely picked his opponent but the synergy with [Spot Weakness] was temptin, especially since a Legendary skill would almost certainly allow him to find out about any affinity the opponent was weak against.

“You’re not going to like this.” Xavier said when he asked both him and Lexi for their input on the choice. “But I think you should go with Piercing glare.”

Ajax instinctively turned towards Lexi when he heard Xavier’s opinion only to find her biting her lower lip. “I’m sorry but I agree.” she said.

“Why?” Ajax asked, he couldn’t see the logic.

“Because you already have skills for both combat and alchemy.” Lexi explained. “It might take a while but when your other skills reach their thresholds there’ll almost certainly be options to mimic the use you want. You have no other way of increasing your ability to pierce privacy skills, more than that you are extremely unlikely to gain supporting skills for it since you have a Legendary one you rely on.”

As much as he didn’t like it Ajax could see their point. More than that his ability to bypass a privacy skill was about to become much more important as it would be a great tool in weeding out the spies that were surely going to try and infiltrate his retainers. With a sigh Ajax made his last selection before stretching out to take a nap.

Good thinking.

It's always been a balance...like when he shared his stats with the family, he learned of the existence of permanent stat raising potions and their limitations. (10%) Note, however, he made the Vigilance choice without consulting Lexi or Xavier. Remember Hatchet warning Ajax of revealing he has two reward skills? Even now, he has a healthy paranoia. 😂

userunfriendly

That is a possibility, it could be a hidden effect of evolving. After all it's not like the system shows an explicit cap of 150 for regular people. Well it indirectly did for the killing a floor boss achievements the level cap bonus was limited to 150 still. So for instance, so long as Xavier maintains his [Royalty] trait that bonus likely doesn't help him at all. but like userunfriendly mentioned we likely won't figure this out for quite some time still. There is a another possibility too, we know for a fact that [Divine Witness] is a mythic trait, and its been speculated a few times that Mythic skills shouldn't have any downsides (like with using [Mana Syphon] to syphon curse mana for instance). We also know the system will re-compensate you if you get a skill achievement reward, but you already posses the skill (like when ajax got curse resistance) It makes sense that xavier wouldn't be re-compensated because [Royalty] isn't a permanent trait and if he was to loose that trait then the bonus could be useful to him. But ajax has [Divine Witness] that already boosts him to the 150 cap, and is a permanent trait that he can't loose. So it would have made sense for the system to have compensated him with something else when he got that achievement. Furthermore it would mean that his boost from [Divine Witness] has robbed him of the level cap increases from both his [Duke] trait (+30) and the floor boss achievement [I'm the Boss Now] (+20). Which would imply that it has some down sides, which shouldn't happen with a Mythic level skill/trait. Furthermore traits are generally capped at a +50 bonus, and other traits that provide skill bonuses normally combine with one another and that resulting trait is also capped at a +50 bonus. But [Divine Witness] doesn't combine with other traits So it follows there is a possibility that the boost from [Divine Witness] is applied after his other bonuses... So he would have a skill level cap of 100(base) + 30(duke) + 20(I'm the boss) + 50 (Divine Witness) = 200, and technically this wouldn't invalidate the explicit limit of 150 from the I'm The Boss achievement, because at the time that achievement bonus was applied it only brought his cap up to 150. Please note though that this is all purely speculation on my part.

The mana gems in the weapons he’s going to have soon are also amplifiers and will do more than infusing himself and still let him have range and function of weapons, also the power that he can utilize in his attacks already would more than likely destroy his body if channel through his own body

Kyle

We all are. But we won't find out for a while. 🙄

I was hoping when Ajax ascended the skill cap I would change. I don't necessarily like skill caps and constantly hope something is going to change that 150 mark.

Well, let's hope that Ajax gets Brawler again. Hopefully he'll do a bit more research on Mana Augmentation and the other upgrades he decided against when he gets the chance. Also, if Brawler does work as you've speculated, then it would be a different choice for Ajax as opposed to other mages and hybrids. He has access to multiple element types, and direct mana manipulation makes him FAST. Unlike for chanting hybrids, Ajax can literally switch between Shadow and Air instantly as the situation changes! That would be seriously OP! 😳 Ajax! You might have seriously screwed up here, buddy! 😱😱😱 Edit: "and brawler could almost be replicated by simply augmenting his armor." Let's think a bit more carefully. First, the Eldest Prince is a Runic Caster, as fast as Ajax. It might cost a fortune, but if the wanted to surround himself with Shadow mana for stealth ambushes, he can have a suit made. He can even have multiple elements in a single suit, Air for speed, Shadow for stealth, and Earth for fortification. So far, we haven't been seeing that, suggesting that skills are superior. For example, Whiskers specializes in clouding a single target's sense, though undoubtedly he has area effect stealth. And he doesn't seem to use runic gear for that, instead relying on skills. Suggesting that using elements to augment the wielder has limits on usefulness, (a higher concentration of Shadow mana should be detectable) or at a certain point, it doesn't scale with the user. Now, we don't know what runes the Eldest Prince has on his armor, but based on what we saw, when Ajax cast Life mana on the undead, it augments his offensive capability. This brings up the possibility Ajax is right, using Runic armor with various abilities chosen by him, possibly multiple sets for specific enemy types might be better, in the long run.🤔🧐 And while Brawler MIGHT provide unmatched flexibility, the ability to hit twice the spec for your mana gem augmented weapon is stupidly powerful. And as he gets more and more powerful weapons and gems, it will soon reach obscene levels.😈😈

userunfriendly

That's what I thought when I saw that option

Captain Greenhat

Tftc

Captain Greenhat

he built his style on the crutch of those gauntlets and it has caused him to tunnel vision on his augmentation skill. there was no thought at all into the utility of what infusing his own body could mean for mobility, what would shadow infusion be for stealth or life for healing, he said he could just have enchanted armor but we haven't seen anything that lets people swap out armor like he swaps weapons and even putting a life gem on the armor might not affect the healing of the wearer. I can imagine him using his existing style while using air mana to remove air resistance as he moves but instead he will have to throw money and prep time into everything rather than have room to adapt on the fly

Robothaus

I think you're missing the point. It's an additional protection, automatic, (and the protection level can be upgraded as he levels Mana Skin), should Ajax screws up, or is hit by something he never saw coming. Any sort of lifesaving protection, should be sought out and acquired, because Ajax can't predict the future. (well, not anymore) Sure, it's an unlikely Ajax will get knocked out, or drugged, but he's only got one life. Ambushes are unlikely to get past his Danger Sense, but just having the backup of Vigilance is worth it. Obviously he won't depend on Vigilance, but if he ever needs it, he'll really NEED it. 😉

userunfriendly

Hmm well it's not like I don't see the potential to one day save his life from that option, I would have liked it to also activate when he's awake from ambush attacks. As is the 2 most likely times for him to be unconscious are sleep and running out of mana & stamina, both of which aren't very helpful for that threshold... though I guess the other options were also not that much more beneficial 🤷‍♂️

Read Isekai

But if Ajax gets knocked out by a monster ambush? No, Vigilance is the right call. Now, I'm sure you'll bring up the artifact that automatically trigger Mana Skin if the wearer is attacked, during the Academy Arc. But Vigilance is different. It only works if Ajax is unconscious, when he NEEDS it the most. If he's awake, he has multiple ways of tanking an attack, even an ambush. Also, as Mana Skin levels up, the protection it offers only when Ajax is utterly helpless increases. Ajax has been delving long enough to know the value of a potentially lifesaving ability like that. Because every delver is aware of Murphy's Law. Hopefully he gets Upfront Payment next Threshold...👍

userunfriendly

Syphon is still a little ways away, last we saw it should have been 5 levels away but it may have levelled up in that last fight from fighting [Telekenesis]? Agreed Predators focus seemed really good, lets hope that [Spot Weakness] and [Judge Threat] both offer decent threshold options themselves once they get high enough For Focused Detail I'm more interested in the syphoning dungeon arches application, but it does seem like an awesome upgrade, with plenty if potential! I'm iffy of Vigilance, given that Ajax can already maintain Mana Skin in his sleep

Read Isekai

I was thinking the same thing!

Read Isekai

But we already know Ajax can maintain [Mana Skin] while asleep, so there's the largest period of him being passed out technically covered, likewise if he was to pass out because of lack of mana & stamina then it wouldn't be that helpful either. Which seem like the 2 most likely times for him to be unconscious

Read Isekai

The gods would likely take away precognition skills as they did to ajax when he first unlocked the system, that's how he got [Divine Witness] after-all, gods don't like mortals messing with time.

Read Isekai

Yeah I was thinking that may be the case, legendary skills have I think a 40 level boost over epic skills, and even more against rare or uncommon skills

Read Isekai

If he upgrades Mana Siphon more, it should. After all, he uses Mana Siphon to extract the mana from the arches, but the analysis depends on his Sense Mana stats. He'll be able to get a deeper analysis of the multiple types of mana in the arch. 🤔

userunfriendly

It's a Legendary, so even in the 20's it was probably sufficient to break through the privacy skills. 😈

userunfriendly

Finally, we get to see all the skill threshold options!! Wait... didn't he evolve inspectors eye in deepwood? I though that's how he was able to see that one champions stats... or maybe it just leveled up to 25 and that was enough on its own to break through that champions privacy skills? 🤔 That filtration option for [Mana Skin] almost got me real excited, I thought he was going to be able to filter out harmful mana types for [Mana Syphon] but that doesn't appear to be how it works Considering he can maintain [Mana Skin] while he's sleeping anyways, I feel the Vigilance isn't the best option for him. Oooh! I wonder if Focused Detail for [Sense Mana] will help him when syphoning mana from dungeon arches?

Read Isekai

"and brawler could almost be replicated by simply augmenting his armor." You're thinking that Ajax could use Wind to move faster, or Earth to make himself more durable. That is an excellent point, however, aside from those two (Earth and Wind) using other elements are probably of limited utility. Life? He can already pseudo-regenerate, as he did with his feet. Lightning? I doubt he could do more than being a human stun gun. And he can already cast lightning. 😈Void? It might be useful if Ajax wanted to reach in and rip out a monster's heart with his bare hands, but no, just no. 🙄🙄 Don't forget Ajax is holder of Mana Siphon. It boosts his physical abilities tremendously, and doesn't even cost his own mana for the augmentation strength! (just his mana or stamina to use the skill...) Does he really need to elementally boost his own body? Does Brawler do anything he can't already achieve using items? If not, drop it. 🤓

userunfriendly

TYFTC!

Kanyau

I disagree. His weapon skills are certainly focused on weapons but his elemental magic skills aren’t. The vast majority of his skills strengthen intrinsic characteristics of his magic or body, not his weapons. I would expect him to prioritize an upgrade that contributes to his mana control as opposed to only being able to reduce strain on weapons. I.e. something that contributes to a scalable skill rather than an individual specialization

James Faulkner

I'm sorry, but I think you're wrong. His SKILLS are weapon focused, and while Ajax has hand-to-hand, he's a weapons focused combatant. Getting Brawler would basically mean redefining his combat style completely!😱 Matched Augmentation allows him to basically CHEAT. With his wealth and connections, he'll have chances to acquire really high level weapons...with significantly high grade mana gems. Like that hammer he's probably commissioning for Void...he can immediately double the penetration capabilities of that hammer! Look out golems, Ajax is coming! 😈

userunfriendly

Thank you

Anthony

I’m feel like matched augmentation is a gimp option tbh. Why tf would he want to focus on using a crutch when he could potentially learn to channel affinities through his body in a pseudo-cultivation system? It makes no sense to rely on items that might not be available to you in emergencies. His reliance wholly on equipment is something I would expect from a low-level fighter not the strongest fighter in the mortal realm

James Faulkner

Forgot about that! Good catch! 🏈

userunfriendly

Vigilance protects him incase he gets knocked out. I agree Upfront Payment is seriously awesome, (see my reasoning below), but Vigilance will save his butt if things go terribly wrong.

userunfriendly

I wonder if there are any inspection or information gathering mana affinities like divination, astrology, stellar, or even precognition considering telekinesis. This would be a way for Ajax to shore up his political or privacy piercing skills without directly acquiring a skill focused on it.

Quyan640

I don’t think Ajax picked the right Mana Skin upgrade. Upfront payment would basically do the same thing as vigilance since he could just put it up before sleeping, and it would effectively give him 1000 more mana in fights.

Kurt A

As Ajax grows in power, he's definitely becoming more relaxed in how much he shares of his skills. Makes me wonder if there's a betting pool somewhere with the Elite squads all trying to guess what skills he has; and keeping count of those they know? And those he admits to having like he did this chapter

Silver Beard

I was thinking the skill would be useful past level 100. At which point, the ability was very vague...questionable up to now.

It will probably help a lot with finding out the mana types in arches. If he gets good enough he might even be able to tell what monsters are inside the floor.

Yay, skill upgrades! Where is my status sheet now?

So how much XP did he get...and did he get any additional stats? Thanks for sharing Curious if he'll have better perception with mana type/percentage on Arches at deeper levels now.

TFTC! 🐶 (Filtering out harmful substances will cause damage to the skin based on the potency of the substance costing mana to uphold.) (Filtering out harmful substances THAT cause damage to the skin based on the potency of the substance costing mana to uphold.) but the synergy with [Spot Weakness] was temptin, especially since a Legendary skill would almost certainly but the synergy with [Spot Weakness] was TEMPTING, especially since a Legendary skill would almost certainly There are always two routes to upgrading. Ajax has the choice of making a strong skill stronger, or use the upgrade to cover for a weakness in his skill set. The reason why he was dissatisfied was because some of his choices were to cover weaknesses. Vigilance, while great, particularly given the life he's leading, isn't as OP as Upfront Payment. He could specialize in using leather or even cloth armor specced for special purposes, like that poison isolating armor from the DeepWood arc, and rely on Mana Skin to provide the needed protection. Now, Matched Augmentation is certainly the best, regardless of my earlier statement. It's open ended, allowing for even higher levels of weapon potency, as he acquires more and more powerful mana gems. 👍 Overcharge is also excellent, and will help him with his staff. Another great choice, for boosting Alpha strikes with his staff, or with his combat style in general. He's always going to have to expend more mana to achieve the same effect. 👍 Focused Detail was the ONLY choice. If Ajax can steal just ONE Legendary skill from a Floor Boss, it pays for itself. 😈. Crossing fingers for Spirit Fire! 🤞He also just increased his chance to learn Space mana from Anna's kleptomaniac bond. 😂🤣 Predator's Focus...😭 Ajax must have really hated giving that up. Lexi is right, he's going to have the chance to make up for it, but seriously, if he's going to continue hunting monsters higher level than himself, synergizing Predator's Focus with OTHER combat skills would make him unmatched in detecting weaknesses of Floor Bosses. Thankfully he's got this massive staff to initiate an OBSCENE Alpha Strike...and let's hope he gets the option to pick it again. 🤩 Say, isn't it Siphon coming up on Threshold? Let's hope that the boost he missed first time, comes back again...or even better, Siphon allows him to refill his Stamina pool...😈😳🤯😋 (if Siphon has an upgrade to refill the holder's mana pool, it would be Mythic class. But with Ajax's Trait, Stamina would be just as good...🤩)
