Happy New Year's Eve and Happy New Year

OK, those of you who aren't Spaniards perhaps are wondering what Betty and Daphne are doing with those giant grapes.

Here in Spain (it's already 31st) we have a national custom. We eat 12 grapes at the pace of the bells of the clock in the Royal House of the Post Office in Madrid (better known as the Puerta del Sol Clock). When we eat the last one, the new year starts. Or three seconds after the last bell rings.

Yes, we are weird.

Why have I drawn grapes so big? Have you tried to eat a grape in three seconds? Twelve grapes in 36 seconds? Yeah, it gets nasty. The grapes pile up in the mouth and the last ones look like the size of a beach ball. And you have to swallow them fast. Family or friends will want to congratulate you on the New Year as soon as they swallow their grapes. Giving your wife the first kiss of the year with a mouth full of grapes is not considered polite.

Well, after getting boring about Spanish culture, I just want to wish you an amazing New Year's Eve, that you have a 2025 that is at least as good as 2004 (if it can be better, we won't complain, right?) and that you can enjoy it with your loved ones.

As for me (yes, I know, New Year's resolutions and blah blah blah) I promise to keep telling the story of our MC and his girls. If I can do it faster and better, I promise to at least try.

Happy 2025!!! (Don’t expect a post tomorrow at midnight)

Happy New Year's Eve and Happy New Year

Ohhhhhh roasted lamb!!!!! Evil, yet delicious bastard!! I LOVE lamb!! My daughter thinks it's horrific, to eat baby animals!! But they taste SO good!!

I've followed the updates you gave on your mother and you have my most sincere condolences!! I can only wish I had that kind of connection and, in the process, call you very lucky!! We've talked about your family, in relation to Catalonia and I can only say I admire their strength and resolve!!

Metal Man

I'll try to be faster. I need to be faster if I want the MC to go to Aruba at the end of 2025! There are so many girls waiting for their special time that I need to invent 26 hours day! Happy New Year, Donar 🍾🎉

That sounds amazing. In Spain there isn't a typical food for New Year's Eve. Each family or region does its thing. In my family it usually was roasted lamb when my mother cooked, but she can't anymore (Alzheimer's), so we do a lighter thing, with a lot of charcuterie (iberian pork and a lot of cheese varieties) and canapes. You can see here how it is the bells thing in Madrid (the most famous place to do it) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf_D7dRrWJo

You will be even faster next year? So more than 8 updates. As far as it concerns me, keep your good work and keep your pace. So you can have some family time. Or go on a vacation. Happy new year! 🎉🎆

It is awesome and amazing to learn of our cultural differences!! It makes sense to me, one grape per bell!! My family celebrates with pork cooked in sour kraut!! Either pork chops or authentic Kolbasi cooked for at least 24 hours in sour kraut!! Then we gather together as a family and celebrate and mourn the year that past!! Then we eat until our stomachs are ready to burst!! Truth be told, I HATE sour kraut!! But I love the togetherness that the celebration brings!! Although we celebrate with champagne at midnight instead of Cava!!

Oh, no. I mean real grapes. We eat one for every bell ring at 12 AM (12 bells, 12 grapes). The tradition says that, if you eat them at the pace of the clock, your next year will be a happy one. I don't believe in it, but I eat the grapes nonetheless. Most Spaniards wouldn't conceive the New Year's Eve without eating the 12 grapes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve_Grapes Some people, like Ivan above, change them for smarties, almonds, or something like that if they don't like grapes or if they are afraid of choking.

It sounds like a grand celebration!! I hope I get to experience it at least once in my lifetime!! I can just imagine the dancing and partying!! Even though I am an old man!! I would love to see it just once in my lifetime!!

Metal Man

I don't quite understand what you mean by the grapes!! I mean I could interpret that in many ways!! Although with contextual clues my, barely, educated guess would be that the grapes are perhaps fermented!! Possibly highly so!!

Metal Man

A big dinner (as big as Christmas Eve) until the bells ring. Then the crazyness with the grapes, and a lot of toasts with cava (instead of champagne). Then young people go partying (or perhaps ate the grapes with friends in front of the city hall clock and then continue the party) and old people like me spend some hours chatting around the table and continue drinking. It's like a second Christmas Eve for us, but with grapes 🤣.

Jajaja. Igualmente para ti y los tuyos

Likewise, Vortex!

Ivan Escuder

Hope you have an awesome 2025 Trop !!

Vortex

Out of cultural curiosity, and meaning no offense, what is the New Year's celebration like in Spain if there is any??

Metal Man

Can I blame the autocorrector? 🤣 Fixed!

Tropecita Games

“Her girls” Trop is our MC secretly trans? Is this the punch line at the end of the game when we defeat the NTR enemy? 🤣 luckily we know it was a misspell lol.
