Reactions to Navi 32 & FSR 3 Announcements (Die Shrink Telegrams)

You may have noticed that a Die Shrink has not come out today...yet...  That's not a coincidence, it's a result of Tom & Dan deciding it would be unwise to put anything out before we see just how much information AMD announces at Gamescom, and boy are we glad we waited!  Tom isn't done making his video (yes one is coming tonight), but just halfway through writing a script the following news has been noted:

...and Tom will be leaking new updates on supply too!  You only have ~5 hours to submit your reactions, comments, and thoughts for Tom & Dan to discuss below!  Be respectful, use good grammar, and be as concise as possible to have your submissions considered!

Hi Tom and Dan! Given amds recent acquisition of the ai company Mipsology: https://www.phoronix.com/news/AMD-Acquires-Mipsology And Lisa Su' reaffirmed commitment to improve ROCm support on consumer hardware: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Lisa-Su-ROCm-Commitment AMD is stepping up it's software effort. What are thoughts and speculations about his and AMDs future software effort in general? Will we see asynchronous reprojection with FSR4? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8piCZz0p-Y what would you want to see AMD focus on?

olle olle

why would anyone care about what AMD does? They don't understand AI. They don't have a proper AI as their CEO like me.

Jen-Hsun Huang

Do you think frame generation will make its way to general/productivity applications? Maybe a use for these new fangled accelerators...

Nicholas not Nick

I want to talk about FSF, or basically FSR 3.0 on the driver level. This seems to be the hidden feature that AMD kept close to their chest until now. Expectations for this new software? It's only on RX 7000, or earlier as well?

FloridaMan

Do you think AMD are being a bit unfair to the 7800 XT by positioning it as a 1440p GPU? You can get 4K 120Hz monitors for the same price and the 7800 XT should be able to max them out fine if you tune a few settings or turn on FSR.

Chris Rijk

We will have to see third party benchmarking to confirm the quality and performance but it seems AMD has been able to get frame generation to work on any sufficiently powerful GPU. I would suggest that this is a good thing and should benefit gamers and the overall industry far more than DLSS frame generation which is locked to the 40 series.

Chris Rijk

I expect that was their goal, but that they have had to delay. Starfield is for Sept 6 and FSR 3 is for "Fall". I'm pretty certain the announcement of AMD partnership for Starfield in early summer + selling the game along with all Radeon 7000s was a run-up to release it with FSR 3 as the flagship feature.

KingHarkinian

Hello Tom and Dan, since you leaked that high end RDNA 4 is canceled, do you think that AMD will take this opportunity to work extra hard on their software features and drivers? Even though AMD GPU's usually has better overall price to performance, they are always behind on software features. For instance, Nvidia talked about ray reconstruction, which I think is an awesome technology. Have you heard of AMD working on something similar or of other technologies that seem ahead of the curve?

Resident Mexican

Maybe AMD should refer to the generated frames in FSR 3 as "X frames". The more Xs the better! /s

Hey Tom and Dan! Do you think the 7700xt having 54CUs and it's shitastic pricing have something to do with each other? To me, the fact that it's not as cut down as we might have otherwise thought (48CUs) indicates that AMD is getting pretty good yields on full N32, and therefore they really just don't have all that many 54CU SKU's to sell. So they're setting a bad price where they know they have more than enough supply (and therefore won't be chided for AiBs milking while the MSRP models go out of stock on day 1) and at the same time the somewhat decently priced 7800XT, where they'll have better margins (and AiB partners can milk more out of launch buyers), looks good by comparison and therefore gets the sales? Otherwise AMD, themselves admiting today _in their public slides_, have a case of massive egg on face.

Jordan Simkovic

I suspect $450 was chosen as the midpoint of 4060ti pricing: i.e. more vram than the 8gb and more performant than both models.

Do you think AMD's bet on integrating simple frame generation into Hyper-RX will pay off? It seems like a big risk, since it doesn't use motion vectors in frame generation, so it could wind up looking really bad, and that'd be a big hit to AMD software's reputation.

Cleansweep

Hi Tom and Dan; Despite it not being confirmed, do you anticipate Starfield will be the flagship FSR 3 title? What do you think this will do to the market if it incorporates all the FSR 3 features but either doesn't get DLSS, or gets it substantially later?

B. Fish

Hey Tom And Dan With the announcement of the 7800 XT and 7700 XT, do you think the price to performance will scale from the 7800 XT to the 7700 XT, where it will be comparable value, or do you think the 7700 XT will be of worse value to the 7800 XT? Also, enjoy your new house guys. Keep the good content coming.

TechnoLadz

AMD Win? I think AMD Win tonight. However I am shocked that they learned nothing from the XTX/XT pricing affair and are repeating the exact same song & dance. How have they not changed anything? It's extra stupid that the numbers are the same too, $450/$500 for $900/$1000. A 7700 XT at $400 would've gotten decent reviews.

KingHarkinian

Is it just me, but with FSR3 supporting all graphics cards, doesn’t it benefit more GeForce users than it does Radeon?

Sad XTX 999

Hi Tom and Dan. First time writing in. I have a question about FSR3. Do you know if the quality of the upscaled image is better than FSR2 or is it just Frame Generation?

Perseus

Hey Tom and Dan, With the announcement of mid range RDNA 3 I was curious on your overall thoughts of the lineup as it stands currently? Do you think that the 7800xt and 7700xt pricing will have a similar effect as high end RDNA 3? Where the 7900xtx and 7900xt were very close in price but eventually drop down to what I would say is a more appropriate price?

alex vega

Hi Tom and Dan. AMD priced the 7700 xt at $450 and the 7800 xt at $500. To me, the price for the 7700 xt seems weird, as for $50 more you can get the 7800 xt with 4 gb more vram and 6 more compute units. Do you think this will be a repeat of the 7900 xtx and 7900 xt, where the latter will get bad reviews at launch and then fall in price?

SumRndmPenguin

Im surprised they didn’t mention anything about FSR3 and Starfield? What are the chances Starfield doesn’t have fsr3 support at launch. Considering they highlighted forespoken on the main stage out of all the games out there like cyberpunk, that they say will support fsr3, I found that odd. Even highlighting an older game without support for the tech showing how it will work on any DX11 and 12 game with hyper-RX since they say it’s already workin, that would have been a way better choice in my XTX owning opinion.

Sad XTX 999

Tom and Dan, any ideas on how the FSR 3.0 Frame Generation will work with older AMD cards without AMD's version of AI accelerators?

Sarcastro

Hey Tom and Dan, I hope you’re well. I was at Gamescom today and enjoyed the live presentation a lot. The atmosphere was wild! I thought they made a very good decision to overshadow the shady price of the RX 7700XT with a banger of a price for the 7800XT. Do you think that AMD will for the first time this generation have a very good chance of releasing a product with good press from the get-go? The 500$ plus the AV1 encoding plus the new software features are definitely making me think that my recommendation of the 6800XT and 6950XT can finally be replaced by this decent RDNA3 card. Plus the 4070 MSRP being exactly 100$ higher does make it all the more compelling. Thanks for your hard work and keep on rocking!!

agent2

Lord Tometh and Duke Daneth. How do you feel about the power consumption/efficiency of Navi 32? It doesn't seem great, but what are your thoughts? Edit: I should be more specific, I was looking at 7800 XT vs 4070.

CompressedAIBlocks

With Hyper-RX I now get one more X for my XFX RX 7900 XTX, which is I don't even know how many X's. It will be X faster and X better which is all that X matters.

Sarcastro

Hello Tom and Dan, xtx owner here. Why has AMD not learned their lesson with pricing with the 7900xt. Who at AMD really thinks a $450 7700xt is a good idea with a $500 7800xt?

Sad XTX 999

How will this stack up compared to RDNA2?

Wasmachineman_NL

With the 7800 XT being announced at $500 with around 6900 XT performance (9% faster than 4070 that tied a 6800 XT in HUB's testing), how do you feel about its alleged price/performance? We've been recommending 6800 XTs in the low-to-mid-$500 price range for awhile, so are you guys fine with this price? Also, what do you think RT performance will be like? A 6950 XT's?

The Immortal Cameraman

You mentioned Nvidia has radical updates coming to dlls in latest BS, we're you referring to dlss 3.5 or something else that hasn't been announced yet like dlss 4?

Falto

T&D. What are your thoughts on FSR3? They didn't show off too much about it and it's been 10 months (I believe) since initial reveal. Bit of a letdown in that regards for me.

CompressedAIBlocks

Hey Tom and Dan! I'm disappointed that AMD is charging $450 for the 7700xt, do you think this was a good decision? Is it too early to say, I'm curious about your opinion.
