Reader Mail for End of August Loose Ends - TODAY
Added 2020-08-23 19:46:43 +0000 UTC
Happy Sunday Everyone!
For a number of reasons I have decided to do Loose Ends early this month. In fact it will be conducted in a couple hours!
So if you have any questions based on events from this month -> ask them below, and I will compile them for the livestream this afternoon (Or potentially save for later).
Be insightful, use good grammar, and above all else - be thoughtful in your questions :).
Do you expect RDNA2 and Zen 3 to be announced at the same time?

Hey tom, I saw a few articles this week about a glut in the memory market happening again, specifically in nand flash. Have you heard anything suggesting that we could see some rock bottom pricing this fall for nvme? Im looking to get more drives (dont need them right this minute) and want to get the most bang for my buck. gen3 and gen4 drives btw

Given the upcoming launches of Nvidia, AMD, Sony, and Microsoft products for gaming: What do you believe will be the best living room gaming experience during December 2020? Specifically, living room setups that include LG OLED TVs, for example. Will it be the consoles like the PS5/Xbox or will it be something like steam link?

PS5 Cooling solution. Please tell us what you know! I became patreon just to find out ^^

Hey Tom,
What's a technology that's on your radar and makes you warm and fuzzy on the inside, but no one really touches upon?

Assuming the initial 3000 series cards are all Samsung 8nm, what are the odds that the TSMC refresh gives us a 3080Ti and 3090Ti?

Rumor has it that 3080 and 3090 will come out at launch. How long until 3060 and 3070 RTX cards come out?

Do you think there will be an appreciable difference between PCIE 3 and PCIE 4 for Ampere cards? Why do you think NVIDIA uses air cooling instead of liquid cooling for a card that uses almost 400W?

Do you guys have any insider information about the next generations of Microsoft Surface devices using Ryzen 4000 or better technology? Thx

Since there was literally no mention of Rocket lake at hot chips, could it be delayed until later in 2021? Or is Intel trying to not kill off the 2-3 sales of comet lake processors?

In the discord you talk about getting a 3080/3090 if the price is right, but you may not if it does not have have the same 16GB of HBM. Would you get it if say, the 3090 was 1500$ and had 20 GB of GDDR6x.
Also do you think we will see a new transistor type when we get to ~2nm TSMC?

Hi Tom. I have been scratching my head over the cooler design on the Ampere reference design from day 1 o f its leak. To me it just never looked like a design that I would want to put much faith in for overclocking. I am extremely skeptical of the fan's ability to draw air out well. What I see happening is similar to what they did on FX 5000 series where a good chunk of the coolers, even for AIB's, were just awful. However I would love to see Nvidia prove me wrong. But in your opinion, do you think that overclocking potential is going to be hinder by specifically memory temps (yes I am referencing Igor 's Labs article); or do you think that I am going about it the wrong way?

Why do you suspect there is such a gap in rumored price between the 3090 and 3080 cards and do you think the performance difference between the two warrants the difference in rumored price?

With Amperes approximately high power draw, do you think we see another Fermi debacle or even worse, mass failing of cards considering they propably use Samsungs inferior node?

With Murthy gone and Bob Swans honesty about how 10nm and 7nm are going; do you think Swans job is safe or will there be some shuffling of the cards with Rasha aiming for that spot?

With all this talk about a 400w Nvidia card, is overclocking going to be restricted to sub-zero cooling? It really seems like these reference cards could already be redlining. You've already hinted that AIBs are having trouble cooling the new cards so I'm curious if there's anything you can elaborate on. Thanks!

When you saw the size of the recently leaked 3090 pictures, what was your first reaction? disappointment, exactly what you expected, or *sigh...unzips*

In the last Broken Silicon you stated, that the rumor, that Ampere is on 5 nm, is as likely as the secret coprocessor. How high would you rate that probability put in numbers? Especially after the recently leaked pictures.

Hey, do you think that Waterblocks for the 3090 will be double sided to cool the VRAM on the back, and the potential co processor if this think is even real? Not sure if you are even interested in Watercooling or have your own thoughts about it.

Hello Tom (recently new patreon here), now that developers have access to Apple Silicon Devkits, do you also see more news related to Apple’s chip development and how it might affect Amd/Intel and x86/x64 versus Arm?

Any news on RDN2 price points? A $1400 card (if we're lucky) pulling 400W is just insanity.

Hello Tom. I wanted to talk about how older hardware (particularly the base Xbox One in relation to the Xbox Series X) can compromise game design. Resolution can always be scaled but complex level design and assets can present challenges for older hardware. Halo Infinite is facing a lot of development challenges and there’s been rumors about 343i cancelling the Xbox One version of the game. Can you expound on this.

If RDNA 2 is going to have a down to wire launch (getting product out before December 31, 2020), what does AMD need to nail for the launch to be considered good/great, *besides* drivers?

This https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/656686185728442373/747176071882997760/EgG193GWkAEO4y-.png appears to be the new nvidia 12pin and also 2 normal 8pin PCIe power connector on what looks very much to be an Asus Strix card - do you know if Nvidia is forcing the AIB's to include the 12pin or is it just "here's a new, more compact way to connect your 350w card" ?

So with all of the rumors flying around since we are so close to Nvidia launching their new gpu's; I've seen 2 major prices thrown around for the 3090, $1400 and $2000. Now I understand that prices are set last minute and nothing is for certain, but, in your opinion, do you think Nvidia is actually scared enough of competition from AMD to launch a 24gb card for $1400? Or do you think it is more likely that they will try to get the highest price possible (ie. $2000)?

With the launch of Renoir lots of people were surprised that AMD had decided to stick with Vega and it's GCN architecture. This makes me wonder if AMD will decide to skip RDNA 1 for their 2021 APU's.
