It's not that the Kunoichi (Female ninja/shinobi) need to sacrifice themselves, the point they were trying to make was that they would need to put their life on the line to get a mission done. It's not like they just go and die, but females are weaker and have greater risk of getting injured in a mission like assassination. PS. Tengen didn't pick his wives, but his father/family did it. I think the idea was to have 3 wives to make certain the bloodline would continue. Earlier backstory showed that Tengen had like 8-9 siblings and all but 2 of them died.
