This is no doubt some of the most epic stuff I've seen in this show so far! A lot of information, intrigue, twists and turns. Even though I'm probably many episodes away from finishing this arc, I can see why people were so excited for it.

The Monkey King Enma i s a representation of Monkey King Son Goku from Journey to the West, where he used an extendible staff and rode on a cloud. Naturally you see where Akira Toriyama got the same ideas. As an added bonus, the 3rd Hokage's clan name, Sarutobi, the Saru in Sarutobi means monkey. There are other mythological, folklore and historical references related to the snakes and toads, as well as Jiraya and Orochimaru, but those are more relevant in later episodes.
