Runaway to the Stars: Page 135

Hiya gang. Slowly grinding back into the comics production mode. This is one of the inter-chapter lore dump pages, this time explaining what tailed spacers are and featuring the "orbital grandma polycule," as some people on Dirtball call them. Tailers are unisex and tend to play it pretty fast and loose with gendered terms. Although if you asked some of them they wouldn't self-identify as grandmas, they mostly find the nickname amusing.

Sapient AI are uncommon, fairly expensive to hire, and often picky about their workload; algorithmic AI often do not know how to deal with complex situations and error feedback loops; both break down and need to be fixed and require manufactured supplies and part replacements. Having squishy sophonts around helps a lot with maintenance and troubleshooting in remote operations, though they are usually a skeleton crew compared to modern operations of the same scale. Also, tailers were engineered over 200 years ago, before humanity's first contact with aliens. The technological landscape was completely different.

If I can ask, why hasn't robotics technology advanced to the point of making efforts to genetically engineer humans for certain tasks obsolete? Why not have dirtball be a few robots recycling scrap? Even if Nedebug descended AI must be paid for their work, it should be cheaper than maintaining a crew of biological beings.

Not sure. I haven't written their backstory.

No, Shyam has three parents and they live the Naya Pradesh station. Shyam and her parents aren't in this book. They look like this: https://jayeaton.site/RunawayToTheStars/Characters/shyamparents.png

Are they Shyam’s parents? Looking back to this comic https://www.patreon.com/posts/rtts-more-shyam-53895101?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_fan&utm_content=join_link

Tyler's microgravity earrings are so fucking inspired, also I bet they all have some MEAN grandma-style recipes tailored for microgravity too... space grandma polycule's homemade lasagna, anyone??

Nemo

Out of curiosity, did these four get together *before* they started working together, or did they start dating after becoming coworkers?

Wolfcat

I can't stop murmuring Orbital Station Grandma Polycule to tune of TMNT

Absolutely love the lack of gendered clothing in regards to their gender identity. Making Paul dress "effeminate" with he/him pronouns is a really useful visual way to show how Tailers approach gender and presentation. (Same for Tyler falling more on the butch end of the spectrum) great job! Paul makes me feel very seen haha.

AriNemera

Ooh, interesting how the four of them display the range of hairlines tailers have!

TheNeonFennec

i love Paul's duckling socks!
