Spell Absorbtion can only be used if you are the target of the spell, so AOE spells like fireball cannot really be absorbed, because they target a point in an area but not a specific creature. However if you were targeted by a spell that targets multiple creatures (Hold Person on higher levels for example) only you yourself would not be subjected to the effect on a successful absorbtion, other creatures that are targeted by the spell would still be affected. If a spell is an AOE and still targets you (Ice Knife for example) creatures around you would still be hit by the AOE.
