So while the Kloss family as a whole might have a certain resemblance to a certain other celebrity family, and both Kayla and Krystal may... coincidentally resemble a couple of famous people, Kaylee's inspiration is less obvious. You probably wouldn't guess it, but the original inspiration for Kaylee's appearance and personality are based on two famous singers: Selena Gomez and Arianna Grande, mostly Arianna. Why? First of all, Arianna Grande's God is a Woman video was super hot; I never really found her especially attractive before the video, but after, I was like, "okay fine I see it."
Second, if I can pull back the curtain: Until the last year or so I pretty much just worked on whatever I felt like at the moment, without giving it much thought beyond that. I figured that if I liked something, plenty of other people would like it too. And it (mostly) worked! The strategy of using one's dick as a divining rod honestly isn't a terrible guiding principle with these matters. But after I had unexpectedly poor sales on... something (honestly I forget what, The Princess and the Peasant maybe?) I decided to experiment with being more data driven.
Well, I don't have that much in the way of my own personal data to comb through. Google analytics is a neat tool: I know, for instance, that roughly 93.5% of my audience are male, most are in America or Western Europe, and most are 20-40 years old. But that doesn't necessarily tell me all that much in terms of tastes, or what people want. So I turned to another site that does very much know that kind of thing... Pornhub!
My most popular series at the time was one that had some... coincidental similarities with a certain internet personality and meme. So I decided that I'd create another comic series... one with characters who shared some... coincidental similarities to multiple real-life figures. And I'd do that by looking at the 2018 Pornhub list of most-searched celebrities.
Right away, I came up with three basic ideas for stories that combined multiple figures from the 20 names on the list:
#1 A comic about rival figures in the rap/hip-hop growing
#2 A comic about characters resembling Stormy Daniels, Ivanka and Melania
#3 A comic about a family that... coincidentally resembles the Kardashians
I think we can all be glad I didn't go with #2.
Anyway, the original skin tone for Kaylee was heavily influenced by Arianna Grande, which I feel safe saying because her final appearance barely resembles her. And that's okay! The skin tone looked overly red with the original shaders, and when I made it lighter in photoshop I ended up making it so light that it barely resembled the original. Maybe I went too far in the other direction, I don't know... I do like the tanned Golden Goddess look, even if this version is a bit too dark for the character. (And her nose looks really red. Why does her nose look so red?!)
Looking back I'm guessing Kaylee would be roughly as popular even if the characters had no resemblance to any real-life celebrities... Kaylee is for all intents and purposes a completely original character at this point. But I've tried to use data and feedback to guide what I work on, and what direction I take things in.
Until recently, that mostly meant user comments. Now user comments are super useful and I love them, don't get me wrong. but there are definite limitations... The problem is that most users don't comment much, so it's hard to say if the views you're getting are really representative. That's where polls come in. They're the closest thing I have to objective feedback about which direction my characters and stories go in. And I know I've probably been overdoing them a bit lately, but it's also really good having that extra bit of feedback, even if sometimes it's just to reassure me that my instincts were, in fact, correct. That's not to say that every decision will, or should, be decided by a poll; my own tastes and thoughts also have to guide things. But I think it's really helpful, and I hope to let my Patrons have more say on future comics and what content I focus on!
