The Book of Eli

The Book of Eli

Comments

unfortunately, a braille bible needs 17 to 37 volumes in total. The smallest (17) takes up 6 feet of shelf space.

Gregory A Mann

He was alive before the nuclear war. Probably learned before.

GenericStatue

He was blind. It heightened his other senses. Plus, he was being lead by the spirit of God. So he was guided by far more than vision. Now the part that is suspect to me is how or when did he learn braille. Again, it might have been a form of speaking in tongues through the Holy Spirit. I don't know.

Terry Underwood

If you guys like Denzel and his work, check out "Inside Man". Great fucking movie

koppite23

Another Gem found. But yea he was blind. That's why they zoom in on his eyes. Remember in scripture, With men things are impossible but with God anything is possible. And yes he was guided by the Holy spirit, that's the only voice you can hear with your faith. I know

Saints_Madness

If you’ve ever watched Bodyguard…..remember….Kevin Costner in the woods at night..,,but he closed his eyes…and he shot at the bad guy with his eyes closed. He was that good at using his other senses. That’s what I thought of when Asia said how??? How did he hit the cat!? The noise was enough for him to pinpoint its location. At least that’s my take on it. The first time watch for me. So glad it was with y’all!! Awesome movie!!! I don’t normally like post apocalyptic films(Mad Max & all that) but this one was phenomenal! Your reactions are always so good! So glad I’m part of the fam now!!

Carol Rocha

A another brilliant Denzel movie is Flight, it's a serious drama in which he gets to flex his impressive acting muscles. The last act nearly broke me and forced me to take a look at my own life

Davey

Was looking for this comment. It seemed to be missed by many

SheisNicole💜

Another good movies to watch is The Rosa Parks Story and Abducted The Carlina White Story which is based on a true story

Ashley Santiago

I'm so glad you both liked this movie. It's one of my all time faves. Your reaction did not disappoint. I love this movie for the same reason I love Pleasantville... different premises, highly symbolic with underlying historical/futuristic themes, and a strong message about human capacity/limitations. Movies that were better each time I've watched it and noticed something new. It's incredible to me that television/ film makers and writers can pack in so many brilliant details in such a short amount of watch time. I love the series and films that are too much to consume in a single viewing (Breaking Bad or The Haunting series from Michael Flanagan). Rewatching them is always brings a new discovery and understanding. Note: Denzel's fighting style in this movie was Arnis, which is a Philipino stick fighting style. I just happened to recognize it and looked it up after the reaction. His coach Dan Inosanto is world renowned and worth checking out some of his videos if you've never seen the art. I studied it for about a year in conjuction with another martial art to boost my primary training art effectiveness. Arnis has beautiful movement, which is why I think it is one of the best arts visually for films.

💯 the result of selfish gain

Stacey Capito

lol, he was blind dude, he learned braille like blind people do. The point is that most of the blind people in that world, were blinded from the nuclear flashes, he was already blind that’s why he could read braille when others couldn’t. Also why his senses were heightened so much. Of course it’s supposed to be inferred that god is guiding and protecting him, but those dudes are terrible shots, so obviously they miss. There’s a shortage of ammo so they don’t practice. When you put it all on god, you take away from how great Eli is. If it was god then just anyone could do it. In fact, he could teleport the book. God doesn’t work that way? Weird🙄

Michael King

These are other Great movies to watch The Best of Enemies, Monster In Law,Dirty Dancing 2 Havana Nights, Waiting To Exhale. The Sound of Music, Ever After a Cinderella Story, The Wedding Planner, Selena the movie, Abducted the Carlina White Story, Mona Lisa Smile, Sweet Home Alabama, I Robot, The Simone Biles Story Courge To Sour, The Gabby Douglas Story, The Great Debaters, The Prusuit of Happiness, Akeelah and the Bee, The Hate U Give, Radio, Anaconda, Aquaman 1 and 2, Pitch Black movie series, Get Rich or Die Tryin, Straight Outta Compton

Ashley Santiago

Eli was walkin by faith, not by sight. He was being guided by God. Why yall think he won every battle the way he did? Even in the gunfight, his bullets wouldn't miss. Cause God was.guiding'em. He said God told him to go west which means he prob also helped him understand brail. I guess his motto was all things are possible with God thru faith. *shruggin* Great reaction tho yall

Jah (jakwiq) (Jah Quick)

One of my favorite lines is when solara’s mom pretends she can’t read the Braille Bible to Carnegie and she says. “I can’t imagine how it must feel to have what you want so close and it mind as well be a million miles away.”

Honestly41

One of the first signs the Eli was blind was at the beginning of the movie where he walked into that house after killing the cat. Before he opened the doors to the closet where the dead man was hanging he stumbled against a chair, bench or something.

Duarte Dunn

I found out that Eli was blind the same way you two did. I was mind blown. At that point, I began replaying certain scenes in my head and realized that is why he did ABC&D.

Duarte Dunn

I had only seen this movie one time. I had forgotten alot of the plot.

Dan Gershgol

7When you watch the movie over again you will see that he was blind. You wasn't focused on it. Now that you know he is blind , you can see the Certain things in the movie.

CLIFFORD HENRY

He was Blind.

CLIFFORD HENRY

Sooo the sun rises in the West, all he had to do was feel the morning sun on his face to know which way to start the day.

Jesse Castaneda

He was a modern day prophet. God set him on a journey that lasted 30 years, to get from where he was to the west coast to deliver the bible. He did not shoot the cat until the cat meowed, so he is able to function with sounds.

Jesse Castaneda

Also keep in mind that many people that are blind their other senses are heightened, hearing, smell, etc.. he could hear and smell and feel the bird, the raiders at the beginning.

Richard Griffin

I did NOT have a clue he was blind till the end. What a fantastic movie.

Elizabeth DeMerie

He didn't drive in the movie he sat shotgun. and as other comments mentioned about the signs of him being blind. Near the end when he walks up the steps to the house he put his foot out so he could sense the bottom step. At the end of the movie they zoom into his eyes and you saw that white glaze as you notice in some blind people. All the signs were there.

Pop_Pop_Taq

Along with many of the comments another thing to consider here is that he has to walk. He can’t be blind and drive. Also how much more powerful is it, that he is blind? I love Asia’s reaction once it finally ends. There’s a 10 second pause of silence, and trying to piece together all that has transpired. So so so much fun!

Jason Ragan

Dj and Asia, When Eli walked into the house trap they asked Eli about the sign.. Eli said he didn't see it. (Eli didn't lie) She couldn't read and Eli couldn't see

Raine Daye

Love this movie so much. The one shot camera work during the house shoot out is excellent.

Karim

Yes, Eli was blind the whole time throughout the film

Josh

Powerful movie. Yes he was blind, but he had God on his side. He was on a mission. God protected him and guided his actions. The only problem with the concept of this movie is that a braille Bible is something like 37 volumes long. 😬

Dan Gonya

*Spoilers* For those who haven't seen it yet DO NOT READ ON* * * * * * * If you go back and look throughout the movie they tease him being blind but it doesn't quite click until the ending when they focus heavy on his eyes while reciting the verses, then reveal the braille bible. He needed someone to write for him because he can't see to write it himself. He bumps into tables in the first few minutes, can't see the body in the closet but smells it and reaches out to it, he also hides in the dark under the overpass in the first fight to hear the echoes better for directions. The blind lady says "make a sound so I can know where you are" and he jingles his necklace and asks how She went blind. He also fumbles looking for his pack to hide the bible when Solara meets him. Such a great reaction and glad to see the twist ending surprised/confused y'all as it did allot of folks when it first came out.

Darth Brooks

Such great actors in this movie, Denzel of course, but also Mila Kunis, Gary Oldman, Ray Stevenson, Malcom McDowell, even Dumbledore and friggin Tom Waits.

Grushdeva

He was blind man it was crazy that twist!

Anthony Jackson

IM SO GLAD YALL DECIDED TO WATCH! p.s American gangster and Fences are my two suggestions for future Denzel movies!

Anthony Jackson

Asia and BJ , idk if u noticed, but the guy who took a sword in the chest in the passenger seat, is the same actor who played the Ukrainian Mob boss who was trying to kill Dexter

Josh

I love the soliloquy that Denzel gives before that massive fight in the bar. It's Genesis 3:18 and 3:19 is what he recites. So awesome, I love Denzel!

RollingAcres47

He didn't regain his sight. God gave him protection not sight. He was blind throughout the movie. Thats why he could smell the guys in the opening fight scene and why backed up into darkness, it didnt matter him. His sense of smell and hearing is focused on throughout. His job wasn't to get the Bible to Alcatraz, it was to get himself to Alcatraz because he spent 30 years memorizing the Bible. When he went off script and focused on Solara instead of his mission he got shot. He strayed from the path God put him on and that made him vulnerable. He didn't need to find the Bible to take it to Alcatraz. He needed to find the Bible because it was a braille Bible and he was blind. Since it was the only one left and he was blind and read it everyday, he needed to translate it to the written word for everyone else

Michael Keefer

I voted for this movie and I am SO GLAD that it made the cut. I can't wait to watch it with you guys!

Mia

As you pointed out, this movie was produced by Denzel, who is very into the Christian faith. His character points out that he was led to the book by a voice and told to go west and that he'd be protected. Although he was blind, he was pretty much invincible because he was given a task by God that needed to be fulfilled. His task was to save the last Bible and get it to the library on Alcatraz to be reprinted, so that it could be brought back into the world, which had become so full of death and destruction. God wanted to save His message to the world "For God so loved the world...(John 3:16)". He empowered His servant Eli to complete this task "I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength (Philippians 4:13)."

RollingAcres47

Great reaction. I don't know if what i'm about to post is accurate, but it may explain what you and BJ were discussing at the end. "Eli was blind before the war and after finding the bible and hearing God's voice he regained his sight until his task was completed (finding a safe place for the bible) This is why he did things a blind man would do and could read braille and also why is eyes were normal at the start of the film and clouded and the end"

Sean G

Great reaction thx for that. And yes he was blind but he had god on his sight. Look at the moment he got shoot into the stomach in the same second you´ll see a lighning in the sky and hear a thunder. Love from germany

Andreas

Another Denzel movie you might like is Unstoppable.

Daren

Flawless film-Denzel's acting is superb, unsurpassed. If you re-watch it, you can see his genius, as he gives just the tiniest clues towards the reveal. One of my very favorite films. Great watching it with you!

David Brown

He was blind...God was guiding him and protecting him which is why the bullets missed. His other senses were greatly amplified. Remember when he locked Solaris in the cavern with the water? She called him a liar...he could have just kept walking, but being called a liar stopped him in his tracks because the Bible does NOT have kind things to say about liars. It was very important to him to declare to her...I'm NOT a liar. I believe it would have served the story better if they had made the movie with him never taking off his goggles until the end when he's reciting the Bible. You do see his eyes moving around all over the place as if he were looking at things...but yes, he was blind the whole time. That's where God comes in...guiding him along the way. How ironic though...he's blind the whole time but no one can "SEE" it....

PianoDean

American Gangster with Denzel and Russell Crowe is an excellent movie based on a true story. The first glue I remember in the BOE is when he takes the bag with the cat and hits the car to see how close he is to it. Then he doesn’t realize a body is in the car until feels the leg. He then just shuts the door. This movie makes you realize small details are important. I was waiting for this one and y’all did a great job with it.

Dan63

Is patreon access down?

Raine Daye

thx for the Sunday treat. Cant go wrong with a good Denzel Washington movie to end the week. If we all being honest, I imagine most people was in the same boat and found out when the brail was shown on the book. Great reaction guys. another Denzel movie to add to the list is Deja vu from 2006. will leave some other suggestions on the next post you put out. peace and love

Kyle Roche

If you watch it a second time you’ll be able to notice things that help give away him being blind.

Tyler Callaway

Omg I can't wait to get home tonight and watch this with you guys. I absolutely LOVE this movie

Elizabeth DeMerie

Good film . If u guys like this post Apocalypto world u guys have to check out "Mad Max-Fury Road (2015). Maybe best action movie of century. Starring Tom Hardy & Charlize Theron

Josh

OSCAR WORTHY REACTION 🤣 Asia REFUSES lol. So happy you guys watched this. It also caught me by surprise of the twist. We all got GOT😆 Definitely a rewatch for me though. Denzel does an awesome job in John Q, also underrated.

Awilda Luciano

Im sorry i didnt make it that far with this film reaction. It is just so unreal i couldnt suspend my disbelief that this blind guy could do all this and not be a jedi lol. Its just not for me i guess. But i hope you all enjoy it very much.

Rio Mendoza

*Interpret not ibterper LoL

Andre' James

Great reaction to an under rated movie with major sybolism and a message for those who have the eyes to see, and the ears to hear it. I'm Gen x and I've seen most of the movies you two review, but always enjoy watching your reactions as you try to put the pieces together, figure out clues, and process what you're watching , debate, and ibterprer the meanings of so many classic films. Seeing you watch old stuff with fresh eyes renews my appreciation for motion pictures in general and allows me to re-experience the in a different way.

Andre' James

That was the genius of the movie was discovering he was blind and immediately rewatching to see the bread crumbs of clues that were overlooked.

JL Green

Eli was Blind. https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1rdyeu/spoilers_every_clue_in_the_book_of_eli_that/

Andre' James

Asia, here are hints that Eli was blind, or at least visually impaired.

Andre' James

If you watch the movie very closely, there are many moments, just small minor things, that give away the fact that he is blind. Incredible acting on the part of Denzel. The part where he finds the person hanging in the closet. He doesn't react until the smell hits him, then he reaches out. The stumbling on things on the ground, the bumping into things, the reaching out with the shotgun like you use a cane. The way he reacts to sounds, but not visual cues. He was blinded by the flash. You just have to accept that he learned braille somewhere during his 30 years on the road. We only see the end of his journey. I think God making sure he learned braille would have been a minor problem. You have to accept his faith is real otherwise the movie means nothing.

Mr Jackpots

I love this movie. It's a classic that's usually overlooked. I was just waiting to see your faces when the big reveal dropped. You did not disappoint.

Mr Jackpots

Liked the Reaction. I see it on you wall of fame, but have you reacted to Training Day?

Kyndu

Been waiting on this one since I seen it announced on the community for this week. A good movie to dive into, on a day I can actually watch when the sun is up lol. Anyways hope everyone has a great Sunday and enjoys the reaction/movie✌❤ fam!

Darth Brooks

Such a great twist.

Jonathan Giles

Hmmm maybe dont say that

Rio Mendoza

Great film and nice with a pleasent surprise

Raine Daye

Oh no sir i must disagree with you. But i am glad they reacted to it since you like it so much. Have fun

Rio Mendoza

Thanks guys. Not a great film by any stretch but it will work. I actually think it is a pretty poor film when you think about what it is, like seriously lol. I do love Denzel so im going to give in and watch it again. Thanks as always.

Rio Mendoza

Dope film. Top 10 Denzel. The hughes brothers were always consistent to me. From hell wasn’t that great but they showed they could venture out. This and dead presidents are great movies.

Kangdarius

He is sexy. He can such a badass too. That voice also. 😍

Kim Cottingham

Can't wait for this. Denzel is awesome in everything. For commenters who may read this also his older movies are great like Ricochet.

Kim Cottingham

hey you guys I wanted to tell you about that comment i wrote about my dad's 1972 SuperBeetle I meant to type that in the correct movie's comment box, Boyz n the Hood and I mistakenly placed it inside Glory's I'm sorry for that idiotic error It was late and I was tired so I guess I didn't see what I was doing Anyway, have a good day!

Karl Kraus

That’s the wrong book…📗🤦🏻‍♂️
