However, a battle shonen can have adult protagonists, see DragonBall trivially. Weak protagonist who becomes overpowered at random because yes, the friend who is really strong and seems unreachable, the girl with childhood trauma related to her father... All stuff seen and reviewed. I didn't say it's a bad anime, for me it's a 7/10 also considering the technical aspects. What next, Cowboy Bebop is a shonen? It has a unique story, interesting characters, good development, amazing action, beautiful animation. There's literally nothing mid here. At WORST, this show is a 8/10.

First of all, they are teenagers and in Denji's case completely devoid of any human warmth, so it makes sense that the most primal and basic shit excited him. Of course you can write adult characters with goofy characteristics like Urahara (Bleach), and Seiko (Dandadan) and still very clearly see they are mature in nature. So it just breaks my immersion if I think the dialogue potrays him like a kid going through puberty. Like a shonen protagonist, which is the target audience. He is constantly losing his cool and getting triggered by minor things, it's embarassing to watch. For example his first interaction with the blonde rich girl. I wonder if I could stomach it better knowing he is a teenager, but probably not. I just think it's poorly written. Which was my second critic point.

Also, weird to somehow imply that Denji is in ANY way mature/not childish. And Okarun for that matter, to a lesser extent. Their goofiness doesn't detract from their character, so why Kafka's? Just because he's 30? Are you supposed to stop having fun and making jokes at 30 or something?

2025-03-01 23:07:14 +0000 UTCJust 1 season so far, just 12 episodes. My opinions ONLY watching the anime without any manga knowledge. Overall, 7/10. I don't hate a SINGLE character yet. Also, It's nice to have shounen battle manga with older main protagonists (main guy is 32 in this show). Art and animation is pretty good too (not the best, but good enough to always be solidly enjoyable). I'm watching the whole series as it comes out to the very end that's for sure. Just 12 episodes in, the story isn't really that deep and there are definitely undeveloped characters in the show, but those are the only 2 main drawbacks the show has for me. Here's hoping Nick enjoys the show too!!!
