The Ibalong, an epic from the Bicol region of the Philippines, features the story of the warrior Handyong and the serpentine demi-goddess Oryol. Oryol was half-snake and half-woman, and no one could escape the seduction of her voice, not even animals. Handyong was known for his martial arts skills, handsome features, bravery, and beneficence. At first, Oryol and Handyong were at odds when Handyong came to rid the forests of the monsters that attacked his kingdom, and Oryol sought to out-smart him. One night, Handyong went into the woods to seek out the beasts, and Oryol transformed into a fully human maiden to lure him deeper into the wilderness. As she sang her song to seduce Handyong into defenseless sleep, she was not prepared to become enchanted by his good looks herself! Handyong barely fought off slumber, and when Oryol turned her back and returned to her snake form, he pounced. He grabbed her by her snake body and choked her until she passed out. Upon losing consciousness, Oryol returned to her maiden form again. Handyong was shaken by this and immediately ceased his attack; he had never hurt a woman. He was overcome with feelings of protective love for her, and when he bent down to kiss her, it freed her from the curse that caused her beastly form. They went on to defeat the monsters together, brought peace to the land, and returned to Handyong's kingdom as husband and wife.
