I’m writing classes, we were always told no dead baby stories because it’s lazy. It gets you the desired reaction with no effort because dead baby is automatically sad. Bigotry was never brought up, suspiciously in a class of queer folks and POC, but it’s the same thing. It’s easy to make a character unlikable if you make them a bigot and make them use slurs. Too obvious and too easy in gaining a reaction from an audience. Making a character unlikable by making them a subtle bigot adds complexity and that slow build of tension and unease and more reflects reality. In this case, you have a limited amount of space to get across why Kevin broke his promise to his husband and show that Kevin really did try not to murder but a line was crossed and he snapped. You can’t go subtle here, especially with a short comic like this, and I would argue that this is true to life since a burglary or break in situation is high tension anyway and people aren’t exactly gonna hold back in what they say when they’re about to kill someone. It’s not lazy writing here, it’s efficient and effective, moreso since you’re someone who doesn’t use bigotry like that ever. It’s like hearing a parent who considers hell to be a curse word use fuck for the first time in your presence.

I love Malcolm’s expression it’s really throwing me back to that era. And yeah, like my last comment this is definitely where I can feel that “okay… I believe him now,” kind of vibe. Like Kevin had to prove himself (and still does because yeah Malcolm is watching him like a hawk haha) but… ahhh I just love it so much. All the feels. Also that was the most TENSE hour of work in my life because I was worrying that this comic wouldn’t have a happy ending… and that would just be awful. <3 <3 <3 <3

My feelings about it are, I feel like folks have to deal with it enough in real life, that I'm really tired of seeing it in fictional areas as well. It's tiresome that when LGBT folks actually do get represented in media, common themes like bigotry are almost always their big plot points, so, that's why I view it as lazy, because they could just have characters that do interesting stuff that also happen to be LGBT. It's nice to be able to go into a bubble where you don't have to be confronted with real stuff, sometimes. That's just my viewpoint anyway, and why I don't like putting stuff like that in my work.

there's no reason to shy away from bigotry, it's prevalent and still just a thing that is part of life sadly, but it is nice that you look at it with a "is this just lazy writing" filter on, that always helps. I think it's good.
