The anime doesn't make it clear but the fucked up thing is, Renly doesn't even understand why he is so afraid. He just knows he is terrified, but where the reason for that fear should be there is only a big gaping hole, after all, just like for every other Knight, his past memories were sealed away by Quinella. Then Quinella, the person that he believes to be speaking for the gods, goes and calls him a failure of a defective knight and just freezes him for years, only for him to be woken up now and told to fight a war on behalf of the Human Empire.
