A small village at night with a market and surroundings in the wilderness [85x80]

Before the next big dungeon, there is this little village. Since I rarely do something like this, I look forward to criticism and feedback.

Description of the village:

The structure of the village is cut through by a river. There is a freestanding mill and a dock for trading. This trading is also represented by the established market in the center of the village. Depending on the arrival of certain goods, it is also not uncommonto have this take place at night.

The village also has a tavern and a large village hall. (This is currently filled with some discussion tables and there is a stage. This is where the congregation's meetings take place.) Then there are also the mayor's rooms. We also have a wealthy blacksmith and a deposit that is owned by the whole community.

In the individual houses there are sometimes more and sometimes less wealthy residents. All in all, the common citizen lives quite simpel and for reasons of warmth and protection with animals in his own house.  In the south-west there is a watchtower from which one has an overview of the surrounding area. The terrain around it is mountainous and wooded and there is an abandoned hut in the forest.

Thank you! I'm actually working on another village right now :)

I love this Village. It's perfect for me! I hope you make more!

Noname

Perfect, thank you! Also definitely don't realize how I didn't see you you could just grab the image from above. Thanks again!

Ian

I have uploaded two more VTT files of the daylight version here. Maybe these will work. As for the pngs, I suppose you just want the bare pictures? Then you can simply click on the pictures at the head of the post here, have them loaded and download them. These are the maps as JPGs in the highest resolution.

AtaraxianBear

Hi! I tried loading the VTT file for the day version, and I keep having issues. Any chance we can get a png of just the day version of the map? Otherwise this is perfect for what I have been looking for! Thanks!

Ian

Oh yes you're right, I've forgotten that. I haven't done the interiors of houses that often. I'll keep in mind next time that jobs like bartending involve more than just a bar. But its nice to hear, that you apart from that like the map :)

AtaraxianBear

My one comment here would be, the tavern doesn't have a kitchen or kegs for ale. Otherwise the entire map looks fantastic!

The VTT files have been uploaded. Unfortunately, the resolution in the daylight version is not quite as high as usual, as I cannot upload files over 200mb. But I should have new internet soon and I hope that this will get better then

I have also spoken to other mapmakers (both those professionals who draw by hand and those who use programs such as DD) about what they charge and their prices are usually much higher and I was even accused by a friend from the artistic field that with my previous prices, I ensure that artists continue to be denied that they are not properly paid for their work... The latter is probably a bit exaggerated, but to finish the whole thing, I want to say that I can totally understand if someone doesn't want to pay 40 or 50 euros for a map, but I still think it's appropriate. As for this comission here. It was my fault that we didn't discuss the price beforehand and I understand that this may seem too much for him, but still I would have liked at least an answer when I asked whether it was the quality or the price. Because then I would at least know what I sacrificed an evening and a half of a night of my time for. And no, I don't make the most beautiful maps out there and you might even accuse me that I'm not a real artist, because I don't draw myself but only put things together. But still a commission is work and I want to be paid reasonably when I work and not for 1 Euro an hour (like i allready did)

These are all solid points that once made me set up a tier for 10 euros in which I then made maps for the supporters. Without wanting to act mean now, however, I also want to argue against your points and explain why I am now asking for this higher prices. 1: These commissions are about maps that you can't just buy anywhere else. In a commissioned map, you can incorporate your personal wishes and points of interest for your own campaign and it is precisely this individualized form that cannot be found in these other packages in the internet. To compare it with a similar area: If people want to have their DnD character visisualized, then of course they could get one of the many thousands of free artworks from the Internet. But some comission artists and it is about getting something individual tailored to your own wishes. Just because there are more and better artworks freely available, this does not mean, conversely, that the commission of an artist should be cheap for it. Regarding point two: A very understandable point that has also made me ask less than I originally planned (and may also make me ask less in the future). The argument is valid, but I don't think it's as strong as it seems. Because a single map is only responsible for a fraction of my income here. I post about 4-6 maps for you every month (without counting encounter boxes individually). At the same time, many do not come for a single maps but for the entire large collection. So a single map is only to a very small extent responsible for my continued support. And finally: For me it makes a difference whether I do something on commission or just like that and then post it on the Patreon. I work on my maps because I have a lot of fun, because I can use them myself in my campaigns, because I think it's nice that other people also use them to have cool adventures. Of course, thanks to you supporters, it is wonderful to benefit financially from it. But the Patreon with its source of income is mainly there to enable me to invest so much time in something I really like instead of standing slavishly at a cash register during my studie years. When, on the other hand, I do commissioned work, that's different. I no longer do what I want to do, I am restricted by specifications and even if I still enjoy my work, it is still work. I then work on assignment and with the aim of earning something. Someone is buying my time and creative workforce and I therefore think it is appropriate that I should be paid appropriately for this.

In my opinion it wouldn't bring many customers charging by the hour. Two reasons for that: 1) With a price of 8-20 euros, people can buy packs of maps with similar quality and more than 10 per pack. Which makes your product extremely overpriced in comparison. 2) Even if it's commission, that doesn't prevent you from commercializing the map on your patreon later (or in other ways if you have), meaning the hours you put to work will bring more and more profit without any extra work. (unless the customer specifically requests to not be commercialized , in that case you charge higher). So I'd assume the price scared him.

I'm still working on a good pricing system, but I'm aiming for around 7-10 euros per hour that I'm working on a map. But it is seldom possible to predict exactly how long I will be working on a map from a mere concept. Nevertheless, I will negotiate a price beforehand and if I work longer than I expected (which is usually the case) then the price remains the same. For a map like the last spider dungeon, for example, I would then charge around 35-50 euros: https://www.patreon.com/posts/dungeon-of-and-54382884

Good question... It was all on very short notice. It should be ready within a short time and since I was out the next days I finished the whole map in one evening until late at night. Since it was so short-term, I stupidly didn't think of setting a rough price first. I then added an agreed surcharge to my working hours (7 hours) and asked for 50 euros for the map. (If he hadn't liked individual things, I would have corrected them or made the price lower). Maybe it was an unexpectedly high price or he just didn't like the map (which I can even understand. This was my first attempt at such a map despite my general experience of map making). In any case, I never heard from him again :/

The Vtt files are quite large and are still upload with my slow Internet. They should be ready in a few hours. I hope that the light works. I use a lot of individual lights to set highlights and create a mood. I can't test how it would work in Foundry myself, but I hope it isn't a big mess of lights.

AtaraxianBear

Also could we have the VTT file too? I'm using all the maps in Foundry and if lighting is pre-built (like it is in images) you can't turn it off and feels very weird for the players.

Emmanuel Giannakos

Not paid because they didn't like the final result or other reasons? Also do you have a pricing for commissions?

Emmanuel Giannakos

Actually, I'm rarely interested in building villages and the like, but since it was a comission, I tried my hand at it (For which I was unfortunately not paid though...) I still have to learn a lot about the layout and construction of houses and villages, but I hope that I have managed to bring a simple village to life here.
