2022-08-26 23:47:13 +0000 UTCIt might just be an issue with developing an ear for it. Before I took Japanese I was very confused about what I was hearing! For example, 'yes' in Japanese is 'hai', which I heard as 'Hi', as in the short form for 'Hello', but 'hai' is not a one syllable word, it is two distinct syllables, and neither vowel sound in it has the long 'I' sound 'eye'. It's a short 'a' in 'Ha' followed by a long 'e' in 'i'. When saying 'ah' and then shifting to 'ee', you just naturally hit 'eye' along the way. In fact, I don't think it's possible to -not- hit the long 'I' sound inbetween. In English there are twenty distinct vowel sounds, including things like dipthongs. In Japanese there are simply 5. Understanding them and learning to listen for them helps tremendously with properly translating. A, I, U, E, O- A (short 'o' as in 'hot') I (long 'e' as in 'tea'), U (long 'u' as in 'blue'), E (long 'a' as in 'pay'), and O (long 'o' as in 'flow'). Another example would be 'kawaii'. You might hear two syllables, Kah-why, but there is no long 'I' in Japanese. It's really four syllables, Kah-wah-ee-ee, and on the way from 'wah' to 'ee', the sound for a long 'I' is made naturally.

At most you can hear a single u sound in the middle but it never sounds dragged out with the g. When Dani is trying to pronounce her name in the video and says Ka-goo-ya it sounds nothing like how they say it in the anime. The English dub doesn't even pronounce it like that.

2022-08-23 19:33:57 +0000 UTCNot sure if you noticed, but Shirogane's father is voiced by the seiyuu (voice actor) Koyasu Takehito, most infamously known as the Beast Titan/Zeke and Dio Brando from Jojo's Bizarre adventure, two of anime's most notable villains. To hear him as Shirogane's father my heart literally dropped into my stomach, I felt so bad for Kaguya XD

2022-08-23 19:30:12 +0000 UTCIt's KAH-goo-yah. There's only five vowel sounds in singular syllables and the 'u' in 'gu' is a long 'u' sound (goo). If there's any mispronunciation here it's a lack of emphasis on the first syllable, 'Ka'. In Japanese, emphasis is put on the first syllable of a name, possibly to help distinguish proper names from the words they are based on. So KAH-goo-yah, SHEE-roh-GAH-nay, CHEE-kah, etc. There are some really great and easy to follow websites that help people to navigate some of the intricacies of Japanese pronunciation if you guys are at all interested!
