Thorfinn most definitely thinks of Askeladd as a father he just doesn't understand it himself. It is hard to believe this is just the prologue but finally Thorfinn can develop and be the focus of the story. Anyway, Askeladd the goat and is one of the best antagonists in anime/manga so now I be looking forward to the next journey you all embark on.
