"Middle School" in japan is 3 years and equivalent to american 7th, 8th, and 9th grades so its less immediately silly to call someone that. "High School" is also 3 years and equivalent to 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. HS is also not mandatory in Japan which is why he has to take an entrance exam to go to a really good one. Also you guys have it right, his name is Izuku (personal name) Midoriya (last name). Deku is a insulting nickname that Bakugo gave him based on a reading of his name. Basically means like "Useless".
