2024-10-01 15:54:51 +0000 UTCBro that Biden/Trulp debate was historical. For the wrong reasons. No matter who you support, THAT DEBATE WAS ASS ON BOTH SIDES. Turned into a screaming match about LITERALLY THE MOST BORING SPORT, GOLF 😭. At least Trump/Kamala KEPT YOUR ATTENTION no matter who you support. Im celebrating the bare minimum over here😭

2024-10-01 15:52:44 +0000 UTCThere is a "why hamilton is/makes [...]" video series on YouTube going into the music theory and what motives are in which songs and why, etc. I forgot the creator but videos are eg. "why hamilton makes us cry" or "why hamilton is a rap musical" and they give awesome insights hat you don't necessarily hear/see, even with musical knowledge. I really love them and they inspired me to make a music theory Hamilton presentation that as of now is at least 3h long

2024-09-20 18:37:19 +0000 UTCFun fact- George Washington, although he was by no means perfect, WAS the only American President to this day who was elected *unanimously* by the Electoral College. The votes only split when it came to electing his Vice President! Which is part of why it was such a big thing that he stepped down himself- like Hamilton said, “Good luck defeating you, sir.” He really could have kept running and getting reelected indefinitely.

2024-09-09 04:10:38 +0000 UTCThere’s like 18-20 Broadway theaters (which means more than 500 seats) and a ton of off Broadway theaters (200-500 seats). And off off Broadway theaters have less than 200 seats. There’s theaters all over the city. Most shows do 8 shows a week - Tuesday, Thursday and Friday night shows, Sunday matinee one show and then 2 shows on Wednesday and Saturday - and most of Broadway is “dark” on Monday so the casts have from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday night to rest up. But yes, 8 live shows a week for each show with multiple shows playing.

2024-09-03 01:20:00 +0000 UTCJust in case you didn’t know, Daveed is so good as Lafayette and Jefferson because Lin wrote those parts specifically with Daveed in mind, and this is the only show Daveed has ever, and he’s said probably will ever do.

2024-08-31 13:49:32 +0000 UTCThere are multiple theaters on Broadway Ave. In New York. Each show is in their own theater for as long as they run. Some run for days/weeks, some decades. Hamilton has been running since 2015.

2024-08-31 02:37:59 +0000 UTCI don't think you noticed. Jefferson and Madison sing the full southern demrepub line but Burr doesn't start singing or dancing until democratic Republicans, because he isn't southern and he's not that convicted about being on that party
Leah Davis
2024-08-31 02:36:11 +0000 UTCQuestion for Mortius: do you know the show 1776? "Sit down John" is one of my favorite references in this show. After "I am the very model of a modern major general"

2024-08-31 01:38:01 +0000 UTCWhat really annoys me about the H.C Andersen reference in this show, is that they do it at a time where he wouldn't even have been born yet. He was born in 1802, so he's far away from writing anything at that point xD Also, hej from a new patron and a fellow Dane!

2024-08-31 00:40:59 +0000 UTCIts very rich for the Americans to be talking about the French as if they were much better haha. (Saying this as an American myself). But all out stuff started as terrible riots and such. (Tar and feathering is no joke). AND we also didn't have a distinct leader at the time. Also sure, we didn't guillotine our king, buuuuut he was an ocean away, and we burned down and destroyed Loyalists instead. So I honestly find it funny that Hamilton is acting like they're so much better.

2024-08-30 20:33:32 +0000 UTCSo Broadway used to be one road but now it's a number of theaters. In fact there are 41 theaters. Originally any stage production not on that street would have been considered "Off-Broadway". Which is where that term comes from, now it's more about size of the theater and rules and stuff. Shows typically do 8 shows a week. So there wouldn't be any ability for them to switch sets like that. Also for shows like Hamilton, yes they change parts of the set *but* the stage is usually custom fitted for that show. Like the rotating stage, not every stage has that so it often has to be built. Shows like Beatlejuice (Which please do a reaction to that show) are huge prop wise and need a huge stage, also moving props and stuff like that just wouldn't work. You should look more up about how Broadway works, the history of it and stuff is really interesting. You both come off to me as someone who would really enjoy learning more about it!

2024-08-29 03:55:35 +0000 UTCIDK if y'all have already addressed this, but have you tried just using Discord screenshare and letting Mortius have control of the pauses? 2024-08-28 21:53:17 +0000 UTCA little good history for those overseas. In american history class we often learn about Hamilton, but before the musical, we primarily only learn a few facts, First secretary of the state, creator of the national treasury, involved with the first political sex scandal (via the Reynolds pamphlets, and dies in a duel. Which is so funny about the talk of legacy in the show, because he thought he was going to write his way out of the sex scandal, but it becomes of the things he is known for.

2024-08-27 18:22:18 +0000 UTCI'm sure someone's commented this by now, but to clarify for Casper, Broadway is not a single theater, it's a term for various theaters in a certain area of NYC (Midtown). There are many different theaters "on Broadway" that run usually a certain show for a set number of months (which can be expanded into years depending on how well a show performs). I think there is a capacity minimum/maximum that defines a Broadway vs off-Broadway theater as well. It's similar for the West End in London. The "West End" isn't a singular theater or street, but encompasses a number of London theaters within a certain area.

2024-08-26 23:19:46 +0000 UTCthe bit in "Room Where It Happens" where they're fighting over where to put the capitol, my favorite is on the Cast Recording you can just faintly hear someone shout "Toronto!" which always tickled me since, y'know. It's not part of the US. XD Also with regards to Burr sleeping with another man's wife - he slept with the wife of a British general during the war when he was unmarried. The general died, he then married Theodosia Sr., They had a daughter (Theodosia Jr.) And then at some point when the kid was little his wife died.

2024-08-26 04:03:44 +0000 UTCOne of my favorite facts from this series of songs is, much like "C'est Moi" from Lafayette early on, "Sit down John!" is actually a reference to another broadway show. In 1776 which is about the signing of the Declaration of Independence, there is a song called "Sit Down John" where the rest of the congress try to tell John Adam's to shut up. And Hamilton sings the line the same way as the original. But...1776 leaves out the fat motherf**** part. 🤣

2024-08-25 21:01:33 +0000 UTCCasper, Broadway is a bunch of different theaters in different buildings and located on different streets. You could go to Hamilton at the Richard Roger's Theatre for a matinee, and then go and see Six at the Lena Horne theatre for the 8 pm show on the same day. Shows do get rotated out for new shows. Cats ran for 18 years at the Winter Garden Theatre until 2000 when it closed. Back to the Future is there now

2024-08-25 16:39:45 +0000 UTCSomeone probably said this already, but there have actually been a few times the original cast performed songs from Hamilton in the White House for the Obama's, so some of the YouTube videos may have been form years apart. And, interestingly enough, the first time was before Hamilton was even a thing at all: Lin had been invited to perform base don In the Heights, but he and Alex Lacamoire (the composer/collaborator) instead did one of the first public pitches of the concept/performances of the ten-version of what became the opening number. But yeah, the One Last Time video is super special. (probably one of my favorite 'non stage' videos, but i also have to shout out the ASL cabinet Battle #2 the then-cast did with actors from the New York Deaf Theatre. it's PHENOMENAL to watch.)

2024-08-25 16:20:52 +0000 UTCThat doesn’t mean it DOESN’T happen, though. Joe Manchin, a senator from West Virginia, left the Democratic Party this year and registered as Independent. He did this months after announcing he would not seek reelection, though, and he still caucuses with the Dems which means he still keeps his committee appointments and the fundamental balance of power in the Senate hasn’t changed.

2024-08-25 10:43:01 +0000 UTCSo, Washington was president for 8 years and for the next century and change every president who came after honored that unwritten rule. Franklin D. Roosevelt is the only US president to serve more than 8 years. He led the US through World War II, which was still going when his second term was ending in 1944. Rather than step down and risk handing things off to someone else, he ran for a third term and won the election. However, he died of a stroke in April 1945 and his Vice President, Harry Truman, took over. After that we amended the constitution to limit presidents to 2 terms. It cannot be overstated how big a deal it was for Washington to model voluntarily relinquishing and TRANSFERRING power to Adams. We literally do not have anything written into the Constitution or our laws as to how that has to happen because up until 2020 IT ALWAYS HAPPENED. One man’s example bound his successors for two hundred and thirty years. Re: switching parties. It’s ludicrously complicated but the bottom line is there aren’t any laws on the books that say an elected official can’t change their party affiliation at any time. What stops that from happening is that it’s often political suicide to do so - if the party you jump to refuses to support you, you’re kind of SOL, especially in big national races.
Andrea Hunt
2024-08-25 08:20:21 +0000 UTCWasn't John Adams Washington's vice-president at the time? Hence the joke that he doesn't have a real job... Also Theodosia's first husband died during the war; by We Know, Burr has been married to her for years.

2024-08-25 04:38:14 +0000 UTCCasper for clarity, don't listen to Mortius. Broadway is a collection of like 40 theaters in Manhattan, New York City. Hamilton ran in one of those theaters for like 3 straight years, other theaters were playing other shows. Hamilton was playing twice a day like every single day, they did not have to wheel off the entire set to quickly seat for The Color Purple going on in between showings of Hamilton, wheel Hamilton back in, and then boot them off to do a midnight showing of the lion king. That would be absolute madness

2024-08-25 02:24:28 +0000 UTCFun fact! Lin Manuel Miranda was deliberately referencing a different Musical in the John Adams song! The musical 1776 (which is an oldie but still one of my absolute favorites) starts with the Continental Congress singing the song, "Sit down, John" since John Adams is driving everyone insane. He's repeatedly acknowledged as 'obnoxious and disliked' in the show. In the filmed version (and in the original stage version), he's played by William Daniels, which most people of my generation would know as Mr. Feeny from Boy Meets World. LMM deliberately sing songs the "Sit Down, John..." then breaks into the insult. 1776 was also performed on the 42nd Street Theatre... which would become the Richard Rodgers Theater where Hamilton is now performed. In an interview with William Daniels, LMM says, " 1776 certainly paved the way for Hamilton—not just in that it’s about our founders, but also in that it engages fully with their humanity. I think it makes them accessible to us in a very real way. To begin an opening number with everyone telling another guy to shut up—what better way to pull these people that we see on statues and on our currency off of the pedestal? It’s an extraordinary opening number." Sorry, I can't resist a chance to point out the 1776 reference. It's a somewhat dated musical now, but "Mama, Look Sharp" still makes me sob and come on, it begins with Adams saying, "I have come to the conclusion that one useless man is a disgrace, two a law firm, and three or more becomes a congress!" and in the second song sings, "A second flood, a simple famine, plagues of locusts everywhere, or a cataclysmic earthquake, I'd accept with some despair... But no, you sent us congress. Good God, sir, was that fair?" in lamenting how the continental congress won't actually just declare themselves in rebellion despite the fact that there's a literal war going on. It's also a fascinating contrast to Hamilton as Adams does not want to be on the field, he is a scholar through and through. He does not have Jefferson's flair with documents or Franklin's wit. Despite this - John Adam's letters to his wife, which many of the songs in the musical between him and his wife are based on, are BEAUTIFUL. They're SO GOOD. They still yank at the heart today because the two clearly loved each other and wrote constantly, and we have really good records of them. They poke fun at each other in them and it's where the famous quote from Abigail Adams comes from, " I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If perticuliar care and attention is not paid to the Laidies we are determined to foment a Rebelion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation." [sic] Unfortunately, Adams didn't succeed in that either...

2024-08-25 00:48:47 +0000 UTCIn One Last Time when Hamilton starts "writing" Washington's farewell address and Washington begins singing it and then takes over is actually an excerpt from George Washington's Farewell Address as well!! From "Though, in reviewing the incidents" to "mutual cares, labors, and danger" is the real excerpt

2024-08-24 22:19:18 +0000 UTCYeah that was another layer of "teach them how to say goodbye"... Washington was the person who established the precedent that "8 years was enough" and almost every president followed that until they made it an amendment (22nd). FDR was the first and only president to serve more than 2 terms. Technically, a president can serve for one day less than 10 years (2.5 terms - 1 day) if he takes over during the previous president's term (due to a death or other reason).
Griffin
2024-08-24 22:02:40 +0000 UTCYeah, simple version of above: Washington couldn't declare war but once it was declared by congress he would have full authority over entire military without congress involvement

2024-08-24 21:55:02 +0000 UTCTo clarify also- John Adams was Washington's Vice President, that was the job Hamilton said was "not a real job anyway"... which is still a common view that the VP doesn't really matter: "they are just there to take over if the president is incapacitated in some way" (an oversimplification but thats what Hamilton was getting at). When Washington chose not to run for a third term, since John was his VP people naturally voted for him thinking he was the next best thing but no one ended up liking him

2024-08-24 18:22:00 +0000 UTCJust a bit of a correction of something I heard here for historical context, matters of war are not solely decided by the president, according to article 1 section 8 of the constitution it is congress which has the power to declare war. And in Article II is where we see executive powers laid out, we see the president with the title of commander of chief to the army and navy, and with advice and consent of the senate is able to make treaties if 2/3rd of senators concur. And of Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality ultimately did not have to go through congress, since it was ultimately a statement on foreign policy of neutrality instead of a matter of war, just a little bit of a historical correction about what was said about matters of war being solely on the president.
