2026-02-06 10:31:30 +0000 UTCThis series definitely has what I call the "season 1 weirdness" a lot of these kinds of shows have. First seasons often feel out of place comparatively because writers are still trying to figure out characters and actors' comedic timings, so pacing can be a bit weird in a first season. Even Brooklyn Nine-Nine, one of your other examples, has some early season weirdness when you go back and watch it. Rosa's voice is all over the place pitch-wise, half the cast (particularly Amy, Charles and Terry) are verrrry different from where they end up, etc.

2026-02-03 17:16:24 +0000 UTCI didn't catch this series when it aired on TV in 2009, so I can't really speak on the reception of season 1 at the time in a broader cultural context -- and for as early as 2009, I can't imagine there would be as much audience outrage over some of the characters' behaviors as there would be today -- but it feels like everyone from hereon out is just a little bit less problematic. the tonal shift feels like an intentional response to S1. the world and characters are more wholesome, fleshed-out and likeable going foward ...plus the pace and energy is higher. you can kind of throw all the mockumentary-style comedies on a sliding spectrum from slowest to fastest paced. The Office is very slow, humor based in lots of negative space & awkward silence -- Brooklyn 99 goes at absolute breakneck speeds -- and Parks (after the Office-style season) sits right about in the middle
