When it lands, it gives a portion of that energy back to Cathmoira, which is what they call the Replenishment. How that whole situation started and WHY it does that is part of the lore that they'll get into. The Golden Scythe is basically the major merchants guild in Avalir. You've met Nydas before; it was his vault that the Mighty Nein delved into on the job from the Gentleman. You see his magical projection a few times during that episode (he tells them to stay hydrated and not die)
